I'm not a real big techie but couldn't you just word-process to html/css or xml files or something? Any formating you can do in Word you can do in HTML. Obviously, the problem is that every product renders HTML differently (which sucks for printing).. but is this such a huge problem?
Lets say someone (one of you guys) were to design a full-featured, free, word processor that saved to html files and gave it up free (like that dude said, you could use the mozilla source to do this). People would go "I can pay $300 for Word, or I can download this perfectly fine FREE program off the internet".. a lot of people will:) The program would be perfectly fine for doing personal word processing at home (that a no brainer). And if someone ever wanted to give out a file, it already an html so anyone can open it (or post it to the net or whatever). If perfect formating is important, they can always obtain the free program. And eventually so many people will adopt and start using this program that Microsoft (and Corel if they matter anymore) will be forced to standardize the HTML rendering in Word (and Wordperfect) with the free program... and Voila! You have a new standard in word-processing! The only difficult part, as far as I can see, is getting the thing to be able to read doc files (which would be really important when you first start out).
Reading/. with it right now.. MUCH faster than IE or Netscape/mozilla (which I only use when I absolutely have to now). Then again my current computer sucks (pII233/32megs) so performance might not be such an issue with everyone else. The ONLY problem I have with it is stability, WAYYYYYYY better than Netscape but not quite as good as IE.. but then again when it does crash it doesn't take the whole system with it:)
Ontario, Quebec (maybe), New York, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, plus all the little states in between...
Call it what you want (Great Lakes something-or-other), but we'd have all the population, all the money, and we wouldn't have to worry about western right wing nuts (Republicans/Conservatives) trying to make us pray and hate gays and stuff:)
Also, I don't think liberal BC and Washington would get along well with right'est Alberta, Alaska and Montatna... I think California, Oregon, Washington, and BC would make a lot more sense together (hell, we might even let em' join out east coast thing we got going here:) Kill off all the yahoos and re-populate the interior with 'civilized' people:)
actually.. what you said reminds me of what Jaques Parizo (bad spelling) said after he lost the last referendum (which, much like you now in the states, had a majority of the white/french population voting for sovernity while the large immigrant vote went to the no)...
To pararhrase hae said.. "We (i.e. White/French/Christian people) voted Yes, it was big money (i.e. the Jews.. which is rediculious) and the Ethnic vote (non-white french) that lost it for us"...ANY chance they ever might have had at winning a future referendum we're lost with thoes words (along with his job)... now if dumb ass George Dubua' would come out and say this (true as it may be) I bet the next election wouldn't be nearly as close:)
I'm just a kid taking 12th grade american history here in Canada, but I think your a bit confused about how the parties have evoolved. In the begining (I think) ther were republicans and federalists. The federalista were for strong national gov (like the present day democrats), and the republican (there we're actually a bunch of different republicans like jacksonian-republicans and stuff... but forget that) were for states rights and that stuff like the republicans now. Around the civil war though they made a complete switch and the republicans we're for strong national government (Lincon and all that) and the democrats for states rights and slavery and that stuff (claiming the 'republican' Lincon as the republican in the modern sense is bullshit.. he was REALLY a democrat!:). After this and leading into the 1930's and stuff is when you think of the ol' southern democrats (who we're supported majorly by the KKK among others)... however, they made another complete switch (the new deal onwards) where the Democrats once again became the party of the left, for strong government and monority rights, while the Republicans moved back over to the right and we're for segregation and all that. The Southern governors and such your thinking of from the civil rights movement wern't really Democrats, just holdovers from the last switch.. and this is where things stand today..
...blacks (and other minorities) supporting the party of Lincon and the left, while white, country folk, support the Republicans...
Now if you we're a ethnic minority (black, asian, etc...) or a religious minority (athiest, wicka, etc...) or some other identifiable group (homosexuals, women, desabled persons, etc..) you certainly wouldn't vote for the popularist republicans who are against progressive civil rights legislation, open immigration, abortion rights, gay rights.. and with their overwhelmingly pro christian, pro big business stance (or atleast that's how I'd feel.. lucky me I don't live in your fucked up country with your messed up political system).
the notwithstanding clause hasn't been political suicide in Quebec, Buchard used it for all that language crap (circumventing the freedom of language and expression and all that), and a while ago I heard that they wanted to use it to make biker gangs (ie: hells angels v. rock machine thing) illegal (probably more as an attempt to try and legitimize the clause than to stop the gangs).
I'm pretty sure Atheism represents more than 1%:) I know of a survey here in Canada a few years back (probably very simlar to the US) in which something like 20-30% of respondents identified themselves as atheists. and that doesn't take into consideration the peir pressure factors involved... There are a LOT of people out there who don't beieve in God and all that crap who wouldn't come out and say it... I wouldn't be supprised if 'deep-down' MOST people really didn't believe in God. Also, it's the fastest growing major 'religion', and has been for a long time.
Why doesn't the US just scrap the whole presidential system and switch over to the time-tested parliamentary system. I mean, either you elect a party or you don't, this Rebublican house, Democratic president stuff is retarted. For example, here in Canada while we have traditionally had two main parties (the Liberals who are similar to the Democrats, and the Conservatives who are sorta' like the Republicans), other parties, such as the NDP, continue to have a strong voice in government. The NDP would be the equivilent to the Green party in the states, on the left and with around a 10-20% popular support. Unlike the Green party however, the NDP has representatives in Parliment (around 20 I think), and a real voice for their supporters (and while there has never been an NDP national government they are quite common at the provincial level). Also, unlike in the states, there is little fear in voting a smaller leftest party (such as the NDP) in fear that it will take votes away from the more mainstream left/centerist party (the Liberals) and give the election to the right wing Conservative alliance party, since if the conservatives did get more representation, the NDP and Liberals could form a coalition government. If this we're in the context of the states, even if the Republicans got more votes than the Democrats, the Democrats and Greens could form a coalition and rule jointly (as long as they had more total representation). The same thing can also be said for smaller parties anywhere on the political spectrum. Hell, for a while the Bloc (a Quebec seperats party) was the official opposition (he party with the second most reps) and we've even had communists in parliament ! Democracy at it's truest:)
Also, the one good point of the electrol college system over a strait out popular vote, that it encourages campaigning in smaller states, doesn't apply to a parliamentary system since your voting for a party representative at the local level to represent you in parliament (so not only does paying attention to every state become important, but every riding!).
I was planing on buying an HDTV when the X-Box came out (since it seemed like a good excuse to switch over) but this dude's saying no games will support it? Bummer:)
Also, wouldn't the way higher reses' (combined with the better textures and the other stuff he said) take a lot more horsepower than the normal (NTSC) version would? How are developers ever supposed to push the limits of performance at normal res's and expect things to run smothly on an HDTV? Will we have to chose between quality/speed on the NTSC side and detail on the HDTV?
the battery's on the visor don't last any longer (or atleast not much.. mayeb a few hours.. and then you have to buy new ones!). They just give that 1 month number since you'll only likely use your palm a few minutes a day to jog down notes, while there's so much to do on the CE (apps, games, internet, music, etc..) you'll have it on all the time and therefore with the same actual battery life you'll probbaly have to recharge it every night or two (not a big problem).
I didn't think Monster Truck Madness was that bad:) It was pretty cool on the PC (the graphics we awsome for what I was running it on) but a while ago I was at the video store and saw 'Monster Truck Madness II for N64!' on the shelf and rented it... while the tracks we're IMPOSSIBLE to do.. there was a whole bunch of M-Player options (especially the king of the hill!) which was about the most fun I'd had on my Nintendo after I got sick of Mario Kart and before I got Perfect Dark. We stayed up all weekend pushing each other off that stupid platform.. and as sad as it sounds it never got boreing:)
Underpowered? At mest the N-Cube will be half as powerfull as the X-Box when they come out (at the same tiem mind you). Also, console and PC specs don't even compare. Since it's doing NOTHING but games you get atleast twice the performance as compared to a comperable PC (the dreamcast is only 200mhz and look at the graphics is can produce... the PS is soemthing like 30mhz! and it doesn't look TOO bad). If I remember right John Carmack (I know you all love him:) is targeting his future X-Box games (i.e. DoomIII) at the level of a +1500mhz PC with a graphics card that won't be available for atleast a year! And considering that you can get every last bit of performance out of a fixed platform PC and X-Box games will compete with PC games graphiclaly for a long time to come (compared to the Dreamcast, PS2, and N-Cube which will be obsolete on day 1). Also consider that thoes comparsons are for high-res performance (as required for a PC or in the X-Box's case an HDTV). If you run the X-Box at max 'normal' (NTSC, PAL) TV res's of like 600x400 I'm sure you'll get nothing sort of Photo-Realism and more performance than you'd EVER need.
This whole board is a load of anti-MS FUD (I'm talking like you people now!). For starters, it won't run 'Windows', just an insanely striped down (500k!) version of the Win2k kernel, by all accounts one of the most stable OS's out there. (much better than Linux for sure, it frezes like a bitch on me).

If you go to www.jimmy.com the guy there is talking about overclocking IPaq's on the fly.. is this what he's talking about? (he didn't give any details). Accoding to him he can have his games run at around 236mhz (instead of the usual 206), and have it switch back to 206 when it's done (since it screws up active-sync or something). He said there's about 8% more power drain though, but that doesn't sound liek a lot, and doesn't matter at all if your running it AC.
This thing is going to come out at the same time as the MUCH more powerfull X-Box, so with the exception of wanting to play Mario, why would anyone buy this thing? I'm sure if it came out today it could compete with the PS2 (as I think it was designed to do) but when this thing come out in a year it will be soooooooo obsolete. Are people going to wait a year for maybe a 25% performance gain over the PS2, especially when they could get at least a 100% performance gain over this thing itself with an X-Box without waiting at all? I just don't get it, with the exception of the fanboys, who here is going to buy this thing?

The Power PC is not made by apple, but by IBM... their also making the chip for the N-Cube wih the same technology.. so both companies are partnered with IBM, but not with eachother. I think that then makes a good trademark case for apple considering the similarity of the parducts (both based on power pc tech).

I play paintball and there's LOTS of CO2 in the air and I've never heard of anyone having a problem (I guess if you inhaled the stuff strait you could suficate). Oh', and you can smell it. CO2 itself doesn't have a smell (I don't think)but the CO2 you buy will practically always be contaminated giving it a smell anywhere from cherry soda to motor oil. It isn't nice stuff to work with though (since it's so freaking cold.. though I guess why it worked in this case) so most people are switching over to plain ol' air or nitrogen.
This is such BS. If France (or China or anyone else) feels like censoring their citizens how is that anyone elses problem? It should be up to them to enforce this stupid law themselves (with a firewall or something I guess?). I think the best thing to do would be to hand over ownership of the Net to the UN, so no country can screw with it. Sure france doesn't mean shit.. but the US has the same ego problem and the power to fallow though...
And isn't the COPA or whatever a US law that everyone somehow is supposed to be subject to? If I we're to host a site in Canada (where I live), and didn't comply with that child protection stuff (like having written permission to participate in forums and retadred stuff like that) could I be charged or have my site taken down? Same goes with kiddie' porn. If I lived in BC (where it's legal I think) and had a site with that stuff, could I somehow be charged in the states where's it's illegal?

there's no need for soemthing as retarted as grafiti on P/PC, you can run "transcriber" and it will recognize actual handwriting (any handwriting.. printing, cursive.. and maybe even grafiti if you'd want to).. and usually with better accuracy than grafiti (as long as you write half legibily:)
if your using it for reading, no question, you need a Pocket PC (colour). Check out pocketpc.com or MSDN or somewhere and look up 'cleartype'. It's kinda' hard to explain, but MS has come up with a way (on LCD's) to make text on a screen look almost exactly like ink on paper (no, not ailining.. way more complicated than that)...they DO innovate you know:)
