It has to be over the equator in order to be in geosync orbit. Objects that are in a distance of 36,000 km from earth will complete one orbit every 23 hrs 56 min, so if it will be over the equator and move in the same direction as earch it will be over the same position on earth
Just a note, a patent may still be kept secret. So the fact that a method is patented doesn't mean that anybody can access it. If i'm not mistaken the formula for coca-cola is patented and secret..

The novelety of this attack is that it is instantanous. The cryptanalysis is done one when the call is being established (when the phone just rings) even before any any real conversation is being done. The exact details are still secret but the attack exploits a misuse of Error Correcting Codes (ECC - are used in communication protocols to correct random noise errors). It seems that instead of encrypting the conversation and then employing ECC, the GSM does it the other way thus leaking enough data for the cryptanalysis to be performed
Yes, but note that just changing the ID3 tag isnt enough since when you calculate the MD5 hash value you can just ignore it and then you will be able to find matches.
Although i wonder, if the WAV files on 2 CD of the same album are identical, the only thing you can prove from the fact that the hashes match is that you made the mp3 file using the same bitrate. I cant say this is enough information.
BTW: A way to move around having the exact same copyit is by introducing small amount of random changes. one bit is enought the fool the hash
There is also an algorithmic analysis of this phenomenon by Jon Kleinberg At citeseer.
This work is related to unstructured P2P networks and gives an insight why the "6 degrees of separation" occur
