Most students have a shell account. I work in a lab at U of I where I tell students not to use disks, but instead ftp their document or whatever it is to their respective accounts. I can't tell you how many times I've seen the dejected face of a student who just lost his paper because of a faulty disk. All alternative forms of storage can be lost or damaged, regardless of what they are.
