  1. BIOS on Software Tweak Makes Linux Boot In Under 200 ms · · Score: 0

The BIOS has to perform POST and configure the board, which is depedent on the speed of the processor. Did they take this into account? Or is the 200ms speed only after the BIOS POST?

  2. Still using the old 28S on Recommendations for RPN Calculators? · · Score: 0

Remember that 28S that came out in 1986? I got my first one in 89, and it has been invaluable both in school and on the job. RPN is the best engineering entry method for calculators. This trusty tool was there for me when I didn't have $2000 to buy a 386 computer for school work. I especially like the way it folds out compared to the 48G line. The one problem with the 28S is the battery compartment door breaks after so many years, and you have to pull out the old duct tape to keep it shut. Everyone I know that ever had one of these had the same problem. I plan on using mine for another 10 years !!(fingers crossed)

  3. This is what I wanted to hear on Dave Winer On Microsoft, SOAP, XML-RPC In NYT · · Score: 1

Thanks for getting me started on finding more about the SOAP/XML phenomenon, and how IBM will hopefully keep M$ straight on this technology.

  4. OOPs ;) on The Object Oriented Hype · · Score: 1

Every useful programming project I've ever completed was done in C or TCL/TK. I've even paused to wonder how much easier or understandable my code would have been if it was C++, and I have to say honestly that it would NOT have been. If anything, it throws in too much jargon and demarcation. I'm sure Java is an improvement in OOP, but I don't use it, so I can't comment on it. The only useful application of C++ that I'm familiar with is MFC. M$ COM model is vague and ties the developer to too much proprietary M$ crap. It is too bad TCL/TK never caught on in the scripting world. It is much easier to read than Perl, has an excellent GUI toolkit, and is easily interfaced through C constructs.

  5. M$ government friends on US Supreme Court Rejects Fast Track MS Case · · Score: 1

Look at the timing. Here is the announcement just when M$ is releasing the precious Datacenter version of W2k. It doesn't seem to have affected their stock price which looks to break the 52 week low heading into negative territory. If they don't start taking over Sun's domain, then their argument that W2k is cheaper and easier to use will fall on deaf ears throughout the entire industry. Oracle and Sun are at all time highs for the year, compared to the Wintel Dell/Compaq industry. Michael Dell needs to make up his mind in public, is he selling more Linux servers or W2k servers. His remarks are vague and inconsistent.
