  1. The suitcase on Cool Cases At QuakeCon · · Score: 1

As the builder of the suitcase server, let me clarify my intentions: Its not a laptop, nor was it intended to be. It would be quite cumbersome as an everyday machine.. its goal is to be a server (a reasonably powerful one.. SMP/192) that is a single unit. I go to many lan parties, and I always hated having to carry an extra monitor and accessories to have a dedicated server. With this, I can carry it in with one hand.. much more convenient. Sorry I don't have a website or something to direct anyone to, but if you have further questions I'm at grantr2@home.com Teucer PS the name mentioned on pq is Tanj because I was home sleeping when the contest was going on, so he entered for me.

Hehe.. everyone seems to think I was trying for a laptop. The point of the whole exercise was to have a server that would be a single unit. It would be quite cumbersome as an everyday machine.

The builder of the suitcase speaks: its not a laptop, damnit. its a server. It doesn't run clients at all. The whole idea behind it is that I wanted a server, but not one that was a regular case, where i'd have to lug around an extra monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc. I just wanted something that would be contained in one box and be carried with one hand. And have you ever seen a SMP/192MB laptop that runs linux? If you were at quakecon, that was the machine that ran the Ix series of servers.

You are indeed correct, the innards of that case are simply a dual lx board and all standard form factor parts; that was a major design goal. btw, I was the builder of that particular entry. The display is a 12.1" hitachi i got off ebay for $79. After much searching, I finally gave in and bought a controller from earth tech (www.flat-panel.com) for 260. I bought the naked kit, which included the backlight inverter and appropriate interface cable. Definitely recommended. any other questions can be directed to grant2@home.com Teucer

as the builder of this madness, my standard reply to "why not just get a laptop?" is "have you ever seen a SMP/192MB laptop that runs linux? Neither have I.. so I built my own." (actually, its not finished yet)
