Actually the telephone companies would rather have more people on DSL. It's less expensive. With dialup or ISDN your actually tieing up phone trunks which are used for phone calls (including your internet connection) With DSL the network connection is routed thru a different "network" then thru the DSLAM etc... to put up DSLAMS is like candy to telephone companies.. something in the range of 100 grand whereas buying new trunks is alot higher than that.
A bit of history here.
10 years ago the average call length was around 2 minutes, now in the present the average call length is around 30 minutes due to the internet. Which means now more people are tying up phone lines and phone trunks to surf the web (at an ungodly slow speed) so inorder for the telephone companies to not run out of lines they have to purchase more trunks, more CO's (central offices) etc. to make up for that.
Now if the telco starts introducing DSL they can get those "modem surfers" off of the phone trunk and onto the DSL network at a fraction of the price. Everyone wins.. The downside is that DSL is in it's infancy and yes there are currently distance limitations. In the ALLTEL market this distance is roughly 18000 feet from the CO, this distance is not as the crow flies (from your house to the CO) but the length of line you have connecting your house to the CO.
So basically to wrap this up. The telephone companies would rather have you connecting up with DSL over ISDN or a modem because it costs the telephone company a fraction of the price than your internet connection would cost them with a modem or ISDN connection.
I'm thinking the name should either be changed to Redsoft or Microhat..... take your pick.:)

Okay I'm driving down the street and make a left hand turn when I meant to go right and end up going over the curb and smashing into a storefront window.. there should be an iron guard rail there so that someone won't go up over the curb.
Or I'm flipping thru the channels and when I get to the movie channels that I don't have are running a special where you get to see them for the weekend, and it just happens to be a nude scene showing a bare chested woman. There should have been a screen that says "Caution Bare titties on the next channel up, do not continue clicking if nudity offends or scares you!"
Just my 1/50 of a $1.00 worth. Thanx for letting me vent.
I work tech support for a large Internet service provider... ALLTEL.. and when it comes to censorware programs we get more calls from parents/adults on how to remove the damn thing because it ends up filtering too much, no matter what the prefs are set to.. which in turn makes the internet quite useless for almost anything else.... I think they can still get to www.disney.com but that's about it and I think even some of their pages may be considered leery...:)

And when you can by a 50 pack spindle for like $20.00 from Best Buy there's not really many cheaper alternatives.
But realize that it's our little america that funds the rest of the world...just keep that in mind.
I don't think the data lifetime really matters.. I hope to GOD that we are not still using CD's and DVD's 100 years from now.. :)
