I loved the original Amiga back when I was a young dude but the biggest problem facing me was that the development tools and documentation cost MONEY. That's the great thing about Linux, it's free with a small f. I'm not going back to the bad old days of worrying about whether I can afford to develop stuff, however great the technology.
I work at a college and filter our web content based on keywords. I'm a strong believer in freedom of speech too but I'm not bothered by this. Many of our students are under 18 and we have a legal responsiblity for them. Also, if they're surfing porn they're wasting resources that other students want to use for legitimate work.
Besides, you can't censor things by definition, unless you are a government. If my students want to mess around on the internet they can go home and do it.
Of course all filtering systems are shit - home made ones are as good as any - but the logs do help us keep track of which kiddies are misbehaving.
