Of course the true comedy here is the fact that there are literally thousands of gems like these littering your 7,000+ post Slashdot Via Crucis, yet you have the brass to actually act like a whiny little child and claim that people "insult you" when they question your opinion in a way you find uncomfortable.

    Now for a significant distinction.

Please don't insult my intelligence, or that of the people who waste their mod points on your incoherent FUD. If you're going to base one of your "let me tell you how it is" dollar fests on the premise that you have or have not said or done something, you need to make sure that's actually the case. It's quite edifying to nail you that way, but I'd rather you just exercise caution and avoid being embarrassed.

I have not submitted the Vista failure log because it's a log, not news.

You mean it has a whole lotta lies, misrepresentations, FUD, mondo dollar signs and "Windoze"s, not to mention links to retarded SomethingAwful kiddie images.

Um, a lot of people already did. You missed it in the comments?

By the way, you should be proud of yourself for using a headline that implies the PC Mag editor is stepping down because of Vista, and for giving him the soapbox he needed to advertise his new Web2.0 startup. I've found that most users don't really need to install that much software. I usually install a few basic ActiveX thingies (Flash, Adobe, etc) and a few basic apps, Office usually and then whatever specific they need. Sometimes it's a pain to get certain apps running, but some things can be solved by tweaking a few directory ACLs without having to open up the whole thing.

I've found this works quite well in the sense that the extra time spent up front pays itself off in the long run. If you learn how to use the local policies editor you can do farkin' wonders.

My mom and dad (who are non-tech people as you can imagine) have been running Windows XP on an old Vaio laptop of mine for three years on two non-admin accounts without any problems whatsoever. Ditto my sister and a few other friends and family. The few times they've had to install something (dad's a big puzzle game fan) I usually just remote in and install it for them. Also, having a shared "My Applications" directory outside of the stock "Program Files" one works wonders. A lot of newer apps can be installed by non-admin accounts for personal use just fine.

One thing though: Firefox. I'm not enough of a Microsoft fanboy to pretend they'd be OK using IE. For the time being IE is a complete no-no as far as I'm concerned. The right tools for the job and all that. I don't actually disable IE, but I do hide it and set it as the default browser.

I'm sure they do. The problem with this is that if BitTorrent can't do it, I don't see how the FSF will. Their capacity to do those things has never been proven in any meaningful way beyond a few dozen cases.

Releasing under a BSD license gives your fellow developers freedom, but also allows them to add malware that can't be seen and removed.
