Depends what you're doing. As a computer engineering student I find the comp.arch.embedded and the sci.electronics.* groups to be really helpful and almost spam-free.

On the other hand, I'm sure most of use former mac users know what happened to comp.sys.mac.games (gee, a big file named photoshop_full.hqx? What could that be? Better download it...)

not only that, but even on a personal level the time wasted is annoying to say the least. I have an old free shell account I used to use for my usenet, etc back in the day. Unfortunatly it seems to be on every spam list known to man. I don't use it often, (my last login shown is 4/9). Today I had 200 new mails. All spam. That comes out to just over 11 per day. Sometimes it's closer to 5/day, sometimes it breaks 20. BUt there was this one time I was away for a bit over a month and couldnt get to my mail. I get back to find 1200 spams in my box (seriously. 1200.)

Granted I've since moved to other mail servers, but I shouldn't have to do that. But it was just too hard to find the real mail in there and I was using up my quota on that crap.

The more of these places that go under, the better.

Well speaking as a male, 18-25, I think I speak for most of my demographic when I say, "THE COMMERCIALS ON TV SUCK!" Sure there are a few exceptions. Got Milk's a classic. The new Britney Pepsi ads(with the added creepiness of having Bob Dole there...) Many others I can't think of now (although if I can't remember the companies they obviously didn't do a good enough job...)

But by god, don't get me started on Mr. Whipple. Seriously, there's always at least one per batch that inspires me to jump up, run to the store, and buy a competitor's product simply because the commerical sucked so much.

As of now, I won't watch the bad ones. If the advertisers change their ways and make them better, I'll watch them. Simple as that.

And as for TV not being free...Well my mediocre cable service sure ain't worth the $35/mo I'm paying for it. If the networks want to fight for the scraps, they're welcome to it.

My school does the first two years in Java as well. I agree, they really should at least expose us to something not OOP. Luckily I already knew C.)

The need for this was really obvious when I went to a job fair and my resume mentioned that I knew Java and almost everyone who saw that was like, "oh...java...isn't that some web-based gui thing?" And as for memory management? My prof was always like "well, java lets you clean up memory, but don't because memory's cheap and the development costs more than the RAM. Besides it takes care of most of it for you." *sigh*

At least my EE profs know what they're doing.

exactly. I wouldn't have a problem with sales tax at all, except for the fact that I ALREADY PAID TAX ON THAT MONEY.

I pay my income tax for receiving the money, why should I pay more for spending it? Not only that, but the company that earns it pays income tax again when THEY receive it. If they want to tax my money once, that's fine, the states need revenue. But twice or three times on the same dollar? No thanks.

why anyone would think to treat this any differently than regular mail order interstate sales? If I order out of a catalog, I don't have to pay sales tax unless the seller happens to be in my state. Why should the net work any differently? But then what do I know.... btw...third post?
