How long do you think it will take them to unplug the speakers?

This reminds me of a Jersey Mike's that got one of those stupid singing bass things. I couldn't help but notice the tremendously annoyed looks on their faces when customers would walk in and push the red "press me" button.

The next day the fish was gone.

  2. Re:One thing I don't understand..... on Microsoft Antitrust Update · · Score: 1

Ok dude, I've been following the flame war that everyone is waging with you. For the most part I can see both sides of the argument.

But to argue that Microsoft hasn't stagnated technological progress is ludicrous. Name one thing that Microsoft has invented that could NOT be done before. I'll provide some analogies to give you the gist of my meaning:

DirectX = really crappy object oriented OpenGL (although now it has improved, I'll admit).
AVI = wrapper for existing encoding standards
MS GUI = ripoff of Xerox PARC (via ripoff of Mac)
    IE = evolution of MOSAIC
Windows Networking = mutation of every networking standard known to man

Look, I agree that Microsoft has managed to take things that were seemingly complicated and make it easier for the consumer. However, they did it in a way that stagnated progress for some time. Companies developing software and hardware had to back up and learn all the new standards and API's Microsoft kept pulling out of its ass.

I think Microsoft should be punished. Maybe AOL-TW will be next but hopefully they will just get the message (there are better uses for my tax dollars).

Work WITH other companies to develop technology not against them. Consortiums, open source, whatever. Microsoft is getting better, but they still are pretty much bastards.

How goes IMSA these days? You all still having fun messing with the rent-a-cops?

One important piece of advice that I had to learn the hard way (stupid way). Don't have people run INTO your room after hours if there is snow on the ground. The rent-a-cops are dumb but not THAT dumb.

BTW, I am completely aware this is off topic.

    I agree entirely.

I could watch TV and see what was happening, but after a few repetitions of the same horrifying videos of the crash and subsequent collapses I simply wanted to know what other people had to say.

It comforted me to know that there was a world out there just as outraged as me. Just as dismayed with humanity.

The stories of /. members who experienced the events first hand really brought everything home. It also allowed for a moment of thanks that some people were able to survive.

Thank you for struggling to keep this incredible resource up and running.

  5. A new paradigm on Living Inside A Giant Wind Turbine · · Score: 5, Funny

Wind turbines in rural areas are often criticised for detracting from the landscape and for generating noise pollution. Stankovic says noise insulation around the turbines could dampen sound. Traffic in cities would also drown out most of the noise, he suggests.

Engineer 1: Wind power is such a good resource, I wish there was some way for us to tap into it.

Enginner 2: Yeah, but they are loud and ugly and they piss people off. Where can we put them?

Engineer 1: Hmmm, good point. Wait, how about in the middle of a city? They are already ugly and loud, nobody would ever know the difference.

Engineer 2: That's a great idea. We could even incorporate them into the buildings themselves. We'll call it a new paradigm. I've always wanted to use that word.

Interesting article, but the simulated user load is a pretty bad estimate of real users, IMHO. What happens under peak conditions, for instance.

Jimmy went out of his way to be fair to the Exchange/PC solution, since the industry average is 350 mailboxes per server...

Apparently industry does not like to bog down their exchange servers.

Seriously, imagine what would happen if even 10k users tried to simultaneously use the quad xeon you mention. The machine would probably self-destruct. Let alone function at a reasonable pace.

Granted, saying that the industry average of users/server is 350 is a rather meaningless number. What kind of systems does the average refer to?

Regardless, there is no way in hell that one quad xeon would be able to handle such an huge load.
