my comment was referring to the fact that 2 trains could have crashed into each other and killed people on board. and my point was that if that happened, microsoft would not have been to blame, but the hackers/crackers who created the worm/virus would. And by writing a reply like you did, you have proved me right in the fact that i needed to point this out to people.
i believe i had good reason to moderate down to 1. there was nothing deserving in the post to make it worth the score of 2. the comment is merely a slightly informative opinion, nothing more. it deserves a score of 1 and the informative, but if i modded it as informative it would have gone to 3. ok thanks.
people, this isn't offtopic, this person is pointing out something that should be changed. a person must be respected, especially after they have died, and are being remembered. i can't think of anything more disrespectful.
there's no proof amazon are passing on your address. i have an email address that i never use for anything, i don't even get my friends to email me on it. yet i still get spam sent to it. i don't know how they know about the address, but as i have never published it anywhere on the internet i assume they have some sort of detection system to search for addresses. all i'm saying is you shouldn't grill amazon when there's no proof against them.
i do what any other enthusiast would do - keep them, when there's enough bits for another computer, build it. make a LAN, get some mates round, play counterstrike til the small hours. or just set up a small network and practice or just mess about with stuff trying to make some cool things work.
i've had my own idea of this for ages. what they need is for each doctor/nurse/etc to have a small palmtop computer with wireless LAN capabilities. this way they can instantly get patients details by simply reading the patient ID off a bracelet or similar, entering it into the palmtop and downloading all their information. it's such a simple idea, and all the technology is around, i don't know why it hasn't already been done.
a few years back i did work experience at IBM. while i was there they were gathering as many samples as they could of people's voices for their voice recognition software. of course i volunteered. it took about half an hour of sitting in front of a computer reading out sentences that popped up on the screen, first reading them slowly, then afterwards, reading the same sentences again at normal conversation speed. it's nice to know now that i sort of helped create their voice recognition software.
the thing about all these new consoles though, is that no matter how good the graphics are, they're still limited to the resolution of the TV. which is bad enough in the UK but even worse for the NTSC TVs in the US and Canada. i think a VGA output on a console is necessary, so people get the option to play on their PC monitor at higher resolutions.
now i can't remember exactly, but i think the thickness of the wire should come into the equation, because electricity travels easier in a thicker wire, and it also depends on the material of the wire, due to resistance.
if you're going to give money to charity, give it to a charity that really helps someone. medical charities are more worth it. come on mate, do a good thing to someone who needs it to survive, rather than to feel better.
i agree. i tuned in to an american radio station over the internet the other day cos i fancied a change. but i just found it weird. the DJs were quite different to what i've heard on english radio. and they were talking about american things that i didn't have a clue about. stuff like how they were at the "sox game" at the weekend, that sort of thing. i'd rather listen to more local radio and hear DJs talk about more relevant topics to me so i understand any jokes and find them funny.
at least with flexitime you get the option. if i was on flexitime i would stay working 9-5.30 most days, but sometimes you just need more than the (half) hour at lunch to like go to the bank or post office or something without ruining your lie-in on saturday morning. where i work noone will mind if you do spend an extra half hour or something out of the office anyway, but it's still better to be on flextime so noone is inconvenienced.
if you ask a regular slashdot reading nerd who probably has gigabytes of mp3s on their computer they will tell you how minidiscs are dead. but i for one love minidiscs, they are so easy to record and edit, and you keep the good digital quality when recording a cd to put in my car. they still offer a much better option to mp3s for portable players. when i take my portable minidisc player somewhere i take a few extra discs to listen to so it's a piece of piss to just swap discs. but even good mp3 players have just 64 megs ram, which is enough for 1 album on shit quality 128kbps, and then extra memory cards are just a bit of a rip off.
i'm sitting here reading this story and wondering how many people who read slashdot actually use and aol account. please reply and let me know if you do.
you call 700 MHz processors lower end? i only just upgraded from PII 333 last week, to a thunderbird 900MHz. i still have my tnt2, and the frame rate wasn't increased by all that much. so no, i don't think my old processor was crippling it much at all. but these days there isn't all that much need for really powerful processors, cos you get the soundblaster lives with their own processor, the geforce2 gts has it's own processor, so really, not all that much is left.

and i bet most of you linux-loving slashdot readers will read this story and think that microsoft are the bad guys here.
think again.

this means less power will be need by the back light, therefore longer battery time for operation. ta dah!

They're gonna have to change the English National Curriculum now cos "My Very Energetic Mother Jacks Skodas Up No Problem" doesn't fit any more.

i bet it will have some stories to tell.

scientists in the United States have revived a 250-million-year-old bacteria
i wouldn't say it was revived because it was never dead.
you can also read about it on this BBC story
