A buddy of mine has had DSL through Verio/Northpoint for a while in Venice, CA (Los Angeles). He was hosting his own domain and email with the line. The service was gone today and when we called Verio the service guy said "Did you get those emails we sent out?". Well no actually - MY INTERNET WAS DOWN YOU DIMWIT! I heard a while ago that Northpoint might go bankrupt but this is still a bummer for LOTS of folks.
Verio here has no plans to provide alternate service. They are, however, providing free dial-up. Seriously.
Just another sign of how jacked up portions of our Internet based economy really are. With the.com bloodbath, the faltering economy, and the apparent "Wait and see" attitude of investors things are not looking pretty...
I wondered the same thing. I exchanged emails with a devshed guy and he said it wasn't mysql that slowed things down. He claimed that the main site uses php/mysql but the forums use perl (not mod_perl) and flat files.

That would explain it don't you think?
