Nobody needs basic any more

The only people using basic are
a) Those who write or maintain Windows gui/components/ASP
b) Those without the balls to learn Java
If they wanted to do something useful, they would write a Java IDE. But that has already been done by Forte/Sun. It seems all KDE wants to do is make linux into a Windows clone, or create a sandbox for newbies.
Now I'm not criticising basic. It had its day a couple of years back in Office 97 and VB5, but you have to move with the times and cross platform, OO is the way forward.
We need some impartial information. I'm sorry I cant point you towards any. But even Kirsch's pages are thinly veiled anti-Microsoft pro-linux propaganda full of anecdotal evidence. Eg, the comparison of web servers where he uses the Tesco site as an example. Therefore I would not describe it as a excellent document.
Often in the IT industry, decisions are not based solely on the quality/price of the products, but on the ongoing maintenance and continuing development of the systems. I believe this is an issue for linux and its propagation into the business world. It is more difficult to hire people with linux/mysql skills.
to learn Java servlets and JSP. Apache Tomcat should be able to do this, altough it would be more hard work than obtaining a pre-built package. In addition clients would just need a web browser so it would be a truly cross platform solution, which is likely to save cash.
Also, J2EE skills would also be very attractive to a potential employer.
As an EU resident, I can speak without a hint of exaggeration when I say that more UK people are concerned about the presence of the EU itself. AOL TW may merge the main content producer with the main content provider, but alternatives exist. The EU on the other hand penetrates everyday life, is universally applicable and increases the amount of tax we pay.
that people are gushing over Descent 3. It has to be one of the most mediocre games of recent times; merely resting on the laurels of it's predecessors. It's not a bad game nor is it impressive. Descent 1 was an interesting diversion after the Doom phenomenon. I have to ask myself the question, why is this Slashdot frontpage news?
I actually believe that linux-only users are depriving and victimising themselves. Like the man who refused to trade in his betamax vcr for a vhs one.
All the KDE people want to do is turn linux into Windows. I remember a few years back seeing KDE screens in a computer mag. It was not long after NT4 was released and the KDE looked almost identical. Even the NT task manager with green and black CPU usage graph was copied.
Since then the KDE has expanded and given birth to all these irritatingly named k-applications. But overall there is an aura of amateurism about their work, and the recent Sun endorsement of Gnome makes me think that KDE people are worried about being left out in the cold, hence this venomous article.
but how does this impact Windows? You see WebSphere is an Java based web application server and Windows is an operating system. The competitors of Websphere are the likes of ATG, BlueMartini, Broadvision etc. The idea of the two competing is like IIS/ASP taking market from linux. It just dont make no sense.
If you did not know about sa/blank, then obviously you've never installed SQL server. Broadcasting it like its some kind of big new hole sounds like someone desperately searching for anti-Microsoft propaganda ("no Microsoft Operating Systems support pre-emptive multitasking",etc).
Indeed, when you install Windows 2000 unless you proactively provide an Administrator password, that too is blank. The same is true for many software including some linux distributions

Whilst this may have been true in the days of WFW3.11, now that Windows 2000 is here, unix is becoming obsolete.
It won't work because of Microsoft's Cut-and-Paste Technology
I suppose that in a way we are responsible, having invented the computer in the first place.
