If all of this hoo-haa gets you to think of actually buying the book, the author is selling individually signed copies of this and his other books (paperback) on his web site at list price, but with 25% of the purchase price going to a vision-oriented charity. Maybe a bit better than sending your $$ to BigOl' BookCo?
My experience was similar - in Northern NJ. Getting it delivered on time was okay, difficulties were frequent in the first months, but the surfing has been smoother (but not *that* smooth) since then.
One note: All of the Bell Atlantic people told me that my location was no good for DSL. Three different salespeople told me they couldn't supply me. (Can you say: "lost commission?") Their automated systems _still_ say I can't get it... but I know where the C.O. is and I did the math; I'm only like 5,000 feet away, so I requested an "Engineering test" which showed I was within range and the rest flowed from there.
