Given the fact that one makes a successful career in America by gaming the sociopolitical system at work, I see nothing wrong with teaching kids how to game the system. Successfully manipulating through your environment to your own advantage is one of the most important skills a kid can learn to do good in life.

To do well in life. To do good in life, you need the opposite set of skills.

Inconspicous. Republicans give to make themselves look good because they fear the masses rising up and killing them for their conspicous hoarding. Democracts give because they care, even though they typically have less to give from to begin with, and don't trumpet about it the way republicans do.

Some things are more important than self preservation in the long term. The lack of understanding of this is why our civil liberties are being eroded severely by Republicans. They'd rather live in a surveillance society than risk death by terrorism.

I've always wondered why Republicans didn't believe that Americans had the courage to risk death by terrorism rather than give up our liberty. It turns out it's really that they don't have the courage to stand up to that fear because of their biology. That's a great relief, as it implies a social program of reinforcing bravery rather than cowardice might be able to reverse their tendencies to cave in. And not only that, they should be in favor of such a program, because they generally revere bravery as a virtue (perhaps because of a lack of same).

This could really be a turning point for democracy, as we've identified the source of one of the greatest dangers it faces.

Sadly, OGL was never the standard in the gaming world. Games went from mode13 to directx to direct3d pretty much universally. OGL was only used by a small number of players (though ID, obviously was a significant one).

That's exactly right. There's a difference between not testing employees at all, and testing them poorly, and testing them well. When I do interviews, my test questions are all about being able to do the work. You can ask me any question and I'll answer it, short of 'how do I solve the problem'? It's very much an 'open book' test. That kind of test will, hopefully, show you how the candidate will really perform in a fairly real situation. And I'll happily say that so far for 9 hires and ~120 rejects, I'm not disappointed in a single one of the hires. Of course, I might have turned away someone competent, but at least I didn't hire anyone incompetent.

  18. yes, it is reasonable on Testing IT Professionals On Job Interviews? · · Score: 1

Because sadly, I have had MORE people with those kinds of resumes who couldn't do their jobs competently than those who could. Until such a resume is a reliable indicator of competence, you can expect to have to take tests.

The claim that other kinds of jobs don't have these tests seems ludicrous to me, though, as I've seen such tests for many areas. Particularly, lawyers will have to take such tests before being hired by most firms.
