  1. Library cardfile on Open Source Library Card-Catalog Apps? · · Score: 1

You might look at a program I wrote years ago to catalog my library. The problem is getting the data in in the forst place, but since the main file is just a colon separated ascii file, it can be done by any extern tool you like, and then the indices can be built. If you can wait a month and a half, Baen Books is reissuing a collection of stories by James Schmitz. The first volume, Telzey, is due in April, which in the publishing world starts in March.

Telzey Amberdon is a teenager on vacation from college when she finds the she can communicate telepathically with other species.

Schmitz was one of the first science fiction authors who used strong female characters, but unfortunately he has been out of print by mainstream publishers for years.

I agree about Ms Penman, but I want to recommend two different novels. The Queen's Man, and Cruel as the Grave. Set in England in 1193 when Richard the Lionheart is feared lost on His return from the Crusades. These two are well done historical mysteries.

The problems with reading old articles in outmoded formats can be solved by not using them. What needs to be in the article? Text, tables and pictures. Why not just post the text in plain ascii, the tables as arrays of data points, and the pictures as plain jpeg files? OK, it won't be pretty, but it will be intelligible ove a long time. If you must, save the article twice, once as PDF, Postscript, Troff, or whatever fancy format you like which will disappear after some time and a plain archival version wich will be readable as long as the file system remains readable.
