The important lesson they learned is this: Accomplish your goals in an arena where there's no pesky democratic process to worry about. Instead, they push ACTA (which still isn't dead), and TPP (which looks to be significantly worse than ACTA). And they label them as "trade agreements" (even though they're obviously treaties), that way they don't have to deal with that pesky Senate that seems to respond better to millions of voters than millions of dollars. Yep, now they can do ALL their business in secret, back-room deals, and skip that entire public review phase.

And then, once the U.S. is signed onto these treaties, Congress gets the easy out: "We have to bring our laws into line with our international agreements!"

I guess you're referring to the fact that the Galaxy S3 was the first device with the 11-pin MHL connector, to allow using HDMI and USB at the same time? I guess that's a fair criticism, that it's not backwards compatible with older MHL adapters.

But I think it also reinforces my point: It's being done with a standard micro-USB port, that still allows charging and data access via any standard micro-USB cable, meaning (as I originally said), Apple's Lightning connector doesn't allow them to do anything they couldn't do with a micro-USB connector. The only unique capability Lightning provides is another way for Apple to get money out of you.

Offering a large lump of cash to "partner" with Microsoft probably managed to convince several B&N executives to overrule their legal team that wanted to fight to the death.

Forgive me for being honest and upfront about the fact the Nexus 7 does in fact offer a separate dock connector, since I was using it as one of my primary examples earlier. You just seemed so fixated on docks...

Anyway, the Nexus 7 can still charge and use data over the same USB connection. The Gear4 AlarmDock does that, for instance. It'll charge while providing audio over USB.

Again, none of the capabilities you are listing are impossible (or even difficult) with a standard USB cable. The only benefit of the proprietary cable is to Apple's bottom line.

And back to your earlier comment, USB3 ports are backwards compatible with USB2 cables. So, no, Apple would not "just have to move to another connector anyway" if they went with micro-USB.

I'm as much a fan of privacy as anyone else on Slashdot, but this is different.

Actually, it's different but in a completely different way than you suggest. What actually happened was the government demanded this guy's personal info, Twitter informed the guy the government was trying to get it, and the guy then moved to quash.

The Judge then ruled that the guy has no interest in his own data, since it's on Twitter's servers and he gave them a license, and therefore he has no standing to file a motion to protect his own information.

The judge then said Twitter had to hand over the information, since they had no reason to protect him. Twitter and this guy appealed the decision, since it's obviously kind of boneheaded that a judge would say "You don't have a right to prevent us from asking for your information if someone else has it." That appeal is pending.

The judge then sent Twitter a letter, asking why he shouldn't find them in contempt for not turning over the information. Twitter pointed to the pending appeal, and he essentially said "I don't care about your appeal, I'm the judge here, which means I'm right, you're wrong. Turn it over or face sanctions."

So while I agree with you that people performing civil disobedience should be prepared to face the consequences for it, this case isn't even at that point yet.
