Ubuntu may be a pain in a VM but I have zero (0) issues using Fedora or Slackware on virtualbox over win 7 x64 just for keeping up with the changes (I Love KDE) and use the odd tool/game or poke around shady websites, Linux over VM is the only way I have found to really USE and love Linux.
My mom is taking "computer" classes too, if she ever ask me to try an alternative OS I will just put a Puppy Linux (awesome distro) on her old laptop and do a frugal install, dual booting for the power user learning mom!.. but what do I know I'm from marketing.

More likely they will put up with it, buy new boxes with the new version and use the old machines with the old version, send a newsletter informing customers about the change and how the new version delivers up to 30% more magic while working on archived material will become painful and 30% expensive (you know 30% less magic) and that is all.

This may be true but is not the root of the problem IMHO, when a developing nation literally copies the American model of education it usually creates what we know as the autistic-professional, a person that have the required knowledge and the talent but can't cope with anyone in team work because the differences in the approach to the problem. Usually the "American model" is used in private (and expensive) Colleges so its normal for graduates to continue their association in professional life, their work is not anything out of extraordinary but they value more the power of marketing and PR, so people believe graduates from Private colleges are "better" professionals. The reality is that the mass of the innovation and research is done in public colleges and universities and the average level there is pretty high.
You must be happy that you can get CS in the developed nations, developing world have to put up with "Systems Engineering" which is a cute name for "Microsoft Marketing Assistant"

On a serious note, Open Source may have born as a software thing but I hope the same principles and philosophy to be successfully applied to other areas of human knowledge. An open source piece of software may be used by millions but an open source designed bridge (as in bridge in isolated area in a developing nation on a geological tricky zone) being used by fewer people can actually make a tangible difference for them.
