Well, since the old drivers were and still are free; why not stop wining and go make real drivers?
We haven't been dependant of the hardware manufactorers making drivers for us since the beginning of gnu (at least), why should we be that now, just because we thought it would change?
I say, let's continue making our own drivers until they finally get it!
