Am I being silly, or doesn't such a database already exist? After all, doesn't the Social Security Administration have a database of all SSNs? Aren't they still run by the government?
I've already got a job, thanks. I've got better things to do than do Q and A over someone elses work. When they have a product ready to ship, I'll be more than happy to d/l it, or even buy a copy if they want. Thats fine.
But if they are listening to their "customers" or whatever you want to call those of us who want to use their software, I want something lean, fast and stable (basically !(Netscape 4.6)).
If they don't want input they shouldn't be surprised when their project gets little support.
You know I'd settle for them coming out with something that didn't crash and sucessfully rendered pages first, before adding on all these bells and whistles.
Why is having a photo of you on file an invasion of your privacy? Unless you walk around all the time with a bag over your head, people know what you look like anyway....
DEC used to make something called the RoamAbout that was the same thing about 5 years ago. It had a PC Card interface but other than that was pretty much this whole Airport thing. You may still be able to find them around, but I believe that the Broadcaster ran around 1,200 and the NICs ran about 2-300 USD a piece.
Guess that's why Digital was such a powerhouse near the end, cool tech, bad marketing.
...does Programming want to become a profession rather than just a job? Professions have several characteristics that separate them from jobs, and professionals are generally accorded more respect than non-professionals. For professions in this discussion we are looking at vocations such as Doctors, Lawyers, Accountants, Clergy, etc... Professions generally have the following characteristics: - Require some degree of higher education - Members are certified by other members of the profession, usually guaranteing some minimal level of education and usually showing that they have passed a compentency test of some kind - Members have a code of ethics enforced by other members of the profession I believe there were some others but they escape me for the moment. The result of this is that if you are a member of a profession and say "Hey, I can't do this I have an etical problem with foo" you are probably going to get a lot more attention about it than a fry cook saying the same thing....

Ah yes, also known as the world biggest piece of vaporware.
As someone who has read Slashdot for quite a while, I can assure you that the AC's and trolls have become less entertaining after the first month or so.
A study of six California counties showed that 100% of their drug convictions were of people of color, although 60% of the drug-using population was white.
OK, so at worst you've shown that six California counties have problems with their police. I don't see how you can generalize from these numbers.
The National Institute for Drug Abuse estimates that while 12% of drug abusers are black, 50% of drug possession arrestees are black.
The National Institute for Drug Abuse?!? Can't say I've ever heard of 'em.
55% of the prison population is black, despite the fact that only 12% of the US population is black. 96.5 % of those tried for crack cocaine charges are minorities, although 2/3rd of all crack cocaine users are white.
So? What percentage of crime is commited by blacks? Where do the 2/3 of all crack cocaine users are white statistic come from? I don't remember drug dealers (this is from my college days), doing a lot of demographic collection.
Some people are smarter than others too... should we require that they work harder in order to achieve the same results as people who are aren't as bright, in order to make the playing field more "level"? Affirmitive Action for the stupid... Sorry Mr. Smith, we noticed the average IQ in your department is way too high, we have a few, ahem, undereducated people for you to take on...
27% of black men will go through the prison system - I believe as many as 70% of them for non-violent drug offenses. Law enforcement agencies target black (and often hispanic) men - racial profiling remains a widespread phenomenon...
Boy, I love this argument. Rather than state the obvious, which is that Blacks and minorities commit a disproportionately high percentage of crimes.. not that you can say that because it is Politically Incorrect, you accuse the police of racism. Not that there aren't cases of that, but not to skew the statistics to the extent that they are.
27% of black men go through the prision system... its not a lottery, you know. If you don't commit any crimes the odds are pretty close to zero that you will go though the prision system. What percentage of black men commit crimes that if they result in conviction typically result in prision sentences would be an intersting counterpoint to this statistic.
, i just want it to sound exactly like a cd!
I recommend you get a CD player then.

Well I don't know how you define favorite, but last I checked a plorality (majority?) of slashdot users used IE on a Windows platform.
