  2. Last one just died the other day on More on IBM 75GXP Drive Fiasco · · Score: 2, Informative

I had two 75GXP's in my main desktop machine. A 45GB for win2k, and a 30GB for linux. The windows drive died about 6 months ago, so I pulled it out and went merrily on my way with gentoo only. Then the other night gentoo hung up on me. I power cycled, and the root FS was crapped out (ext3). So that machine is now a paperweight until I get off my lazy ass and go buy another drive and sit through the painfully long gentoo installation/build process. Oh well, no harm done, all my important data lives on an old PII-300MHz in my basement with two 160GB Maxtors in RAID1.

Still pisses me off though, I bought those drives because of IBM's supposed reliability.

"Microsoft said it plans to disclose 385 bits of computer code and internal operating rules, previously kept secret, that outside software developers can use to write programs to run on Windows."

385 bits huh.... couldn't even let us have the rest of the 49th byte.

  4. Temperature Swings on 12-volt Plexiglass Computer · · Score: 1

I've been contemplating putting a computer and touchscreen lcd in my car for a while now, for both MP3 and GPS-NAV. (And any other things I decide to do with it, such as security system, remote start, etc...

My main concern is how well standard components, mobo, cpu, ram, and mostly the hard drive will hold up against temperature swings in the vehicle. I live in NJ which doesn't have the wildest climate in the world but your still looking at temp variations between subzero to 100+. And that's outside the car. Inside can reach 120 or so parked in the sun, and then be cranked down into the 70's within minutes when I hop in and fire up the A/C. Same goes for winter, car is sitting parked overnight at about 20 degrees, and I turn on the heat, and again, within minutes it's 70 degrees.

I know with alot of electronics such as PIC microcontrolers you can get automotive rated parts that are designed to withstand that kind of abuse. I wonder how well standard equipment will fare though.

Maybe you can call it lazyness, but I don't want to spend the time and money to design the hardware and user interface, install it in the car and then have it die on me.

Even if the electronics hold up, I'd be most worried about the hard drive. I thought about compact flash, but it's just not large enough. My end goal is to have it 802.11 enabled, so when parked in the driveway the in car system can sync up with any new mp3's I've ripped and placed on my server. 20+ gig's of compact flash just ain't that easy to come by :-)

Any suggestions or related information would be appreciated...

Sep 30 11:55:29 dave kernel: hdf: IBM-DTLA-307030, ATA DISK drive

The 45 gig drive I had purchaced first, and has never even hiccuped at me. I had purchaced the second drive a few months later when an of 4.3gig western digital finally passed on after many years of faithful service. The 30 gig drive started making horrible grinding noises during my initial partitioning (DiskDrake under Linux 8.0 Beta3 I believe). I ran some diagnostic program from IBM's website, it gave me some cryptic error message in hex, I called up the place I purchaced the drive from (www.mwave.com) and they cross shipped me a new drive (same model), which seems to be working fine for a bit less than a year now.

I have also heard from a friend that had similar problems. The first thing IBM tech support asked him (drive was purchaced during winter months) was if he let the drive reach room temperature after delivery before power up. Apparently there are some condensation issues. This was not my problem as I lived in an appartment at the time and it was happily sitting in the lobby all day before I got home, my friend on the other hand, I suspect his drive was sitting on his front porch untill he got home from work.

And lets face it, no one I know can stare at a shiny new HDD for that long before chucking it in and firing it up.
