This hasn't ended. The rampant A/S/L'ers exist, but that's not all that's out there. Two years ago when I was 16 I met the person I love, and it certainly was not what I had come to the IRC channel for. Was a real surprise to me when she expressed interest. Now, the channel's nothing like a dating service, but a lot of my closest friends on there have fell in love there, and I'm pretty certain that's not what they were there for, either.
Maybe you just have to know where to look to find kindred spirits. I doubt places like #chat or alt.sex.romance.beachtoys.of.love are very viable options for intelligent conversation, but if you look in the right place, they're out there.
