There was a point in time that I thought Dvorak was an "industry insider" who had a unique perspective on technology and its impacts. Over time he's become less and less connected and as a consequence less and less relevant.
Microsoft is a business and ultimately they invest their money when they believe they are going to get a good return on their investment. Purchasing Opera, beyond any anti-trust concerns, does not seem like a marriage of companies that would thrive. The cultural differences between them are likely large. This also assumes that Opera wants to be purchased although in the end everything is for sale if the price is right, I guess.
Google's http://www.dontbeevil.com/2004_05_09_arch.htmldon' t be evil culture is something we hear less and less about. While I'd like it to be true their privacy policies leave a lot of openings for them. This is the next logical step for them -- they're already tracking a lot about you so why not take the last step and literally track everything everyone is doing with free Wi-Fi.
I use Google but the more I read about these types of plans I wonder if it is time to start thinking about an alternative.
I've been in your position before and having survived a few suggestions.
- Ensure you know what the hiring (one-over) manager is looking for. Is the priority training? Project management? Team development? Process improvement? I'm sure you have things you want in your manager, but make sure you know what The Company is looking for.
- As with any interview, ensure that you have the candidate provide you with concrete examples given for your questions. Bad question: Tell me about your management philosophy. Good question: Give me an example of a time when The Company's needs and the employee's needs were at odds and how you handled it. (For example an employee wants vacation but their project was late.)
- Be ready to have a manager that your feedback was "no" on become your manager. It happened to me.
- Pretty obvious: Make a good impression! This person may soon be your boss!
It seems like the more Microsoft tries to tighten its grip on its users, the more of an opportunity it would be for Windows alternatives like Linux.
Do you forsee Microsoft's "Rent Software Or Be Cut Off" strategy helping the spread of Linux to any great degree?
What I find most interesting is that they seemed to have an ocean of data for just a few months of work. How long do you think they had the affidavit prepared for? More than a few days, I am guessing.
At some point 'they' became aware of the mole. Instead of just immediately crushing him, the trade secret would be to begin to feed him what was, in fact, false information. See where the information goes, find out what the reactions are, gauge the 'damage'. It is not by coincidence that Hanssen was recently 'promoted' into a 'new group'. I would suspect he has been known as a traitor for quite some time now (years here people).
And if THIS is what they are making all the noise about, what is it that the FBI / NSA doesn't want us to be watching right now.
