  1. Fall isn't always SWAT related! on Review: Blow · · Score: 1
What is this crap about how in drug movies:

"...the falls are always -- always -- signaled by DEA and FBI blue-helmeted SWAT teams"?

I don't recall any SWAT teams in Trainspotting. A classic movie about heroin, with lots of falls and NO SWAT teams. I highly recommend it.

Somehow people manage to fall without federal ("blue-helmeted") aid.

  2. Will something PLEASE crash? on Iridium Returns From The Dead. Again. · · Score: 5

I can't stand waiting any more...
The endless disappointment of Mir being
    kept in orbit...
    The on-the-edge-of-your-seat-anticipation
waiting for dozens of satellites to crash
and burn... only to be DENIED!

Hurry up and crash something already...
    I'm not satisfied.

And the way me and my sisters played it we would keep inventing new currency to introduce into the game... E.g.: Bus tickets were worth 10 times the highest existing denomination... This makes for a very long, "wealthy" game... Well, at least very high inflation!

  4. How about: Why does Earth have so much water? on Mars May Be Dry After All · · Score: 3

Another poster has answered your question about how Mars loses water. No magnetic field -> dissociation of water into hydrogen -> lose hydrogen to space.

Perhaps the question should really be: How is it that Earth came to have so much water? Last I heard, scientists were still arguing about this, but cometary impacts are one likely source. In addition, it would seem that the Earth's magnetic field helps protect what water we have (in contrast with Mars).

We live on one lucky planet :)

I _really_ want to see a locust driving a monster truck... He will crush you like a little bug.

It could also make for an interesting variation on battlebots... battlebugs?

  6. Re:Password- yet another silly password on Yup, Somebody Cracked Slashdot · · Score: 1

    Another gratuitous movie quote:

    The password is "swordfish"

It's from a Marx brothers movie
and to me represents the ultimate
    stupid passwd.

Can't remember which movie, but it
    features Harpo (the speechless brother)
pulling a swordfish out of his coat
pocket and waving it at the doorman
in order to get into some exclusive
    place.

  7. Conflicting policies cause problems! on US Government Computer Security Evaluated · · Score: 2
I have a friend, who is a foreign national, working at a DOE lab on ENTIRELY nonclassified, nonsensitive research. All classified activity is separated from the unclassified world by an air gap - totally beyond their reach, as it should be.

HOWEVER: The network they have to work on was only recently put beyind a firewall. And before that foreigners like them were especially vulnerable because they would not let them use ssh for Export Control reasons!

So a policy intended to "protect" U.S. interests, actually placed their own networks at risk!
