The whole idea of the internet is to expand your horizons and learn more than you knew before you go online (each time you get on - even if only more graphic pictures in your memory:) ) - if the publishers were smart - they would figure out a way to change with the internet as opposed to whining about how they are being left behind... the publishers could become a strong hold in a "information age"... hopefully the world realizes soon that with the internet we can have a free information system for everything and stop paying for the information alone... new economic ideas florish in my mind... but that is a different topic:)
well, i have a friend or two who code for a living (i am lucky i don't - i'm not very good) and they argue that smokin pot helps them when they get stuck on a difficult bit of coding...
i have have choosen to avoid that kind of lifestyle all my life and i still cannot quite see their point of veiw on the subject... i argue with them that if you have to get high to code difficult things - it isnt really you - its the drugs making it possible...
i would have a hard time claiming full credit for a high induced solution... (course someone could argue that is why i'm not very good i suppose)
A witch hunt is very different from tracking down (or hunting) pedophiles. Witch hunts ended in death, and alot of innocent people dieing. A pedophile tries to kill the soul(s) of innocent children. I speak from knowledge - children DO NOT "want" their sexually awakened.
That aside - This whole trail of replies seems to be stirred up more by an attention seeking (in need of a reality check) person than about the technology or issues in the original article.
My opinion is the government is never going to catch all the bad guys... but being the government I don't blame them for trying to invent new ways to help themselves (they need the help). I don't happen to agree that Carnivore is ethical on a long term basis (specially in the hands of government).
I find it interesting that music has not been likened to books in this sense - "legally" you cannot make a copy of an entire book, you are supposed to by another copy if you want another copy... "legally" you are not supposed to make color copies of pictures that are copywrited (as in art books, postcards, portrait studio photos)... but if you walk into a copy shop and make the copies yourself, the copy shop isn't held responsible for breaking the law, the copy machine maker isn't held responsible for breaking the law, only the person making the copies could get in trouble (although I have never heard of someone getting nailed for that)...
I realize there is a difference, but just the ideas involved make me think about why Napster is so different than CopyMax, Kinko's, Canon or Xerox...
