Also, writing such a 'useless' system might actually be what your professors are looking for, since it's what you are likely going to work on much of your time as a corporate code monkey. 'Useless' here meaning: in your perception, not to the corporate bottom line.
Also those manufacturers of complex hardware like Nvidia might care, so that they can justify putting the resources aside to develop Linux drivers.
If Nvidia gave a hoot about linux they would open-source the 3D driver or at least provide specs and docs to the nouveau project. I no, I seriously don't think they need to be told by LiCo how many people use linux. They Know!
20 years ago the commodore 64 was ancient news already. In '91 we had all long jumped onto the x86 bandwagon, lingering in the msdos purgatory, fiddling with waffle-uucp, until two years later linux heaven finally arrived as version 0.99.something.
You underestimate the seriousness of peakoil. If overall production is in decline, while demand increases, the actual decline in production will be very steep indeed. There's nothing gradual about it, rather like a steep cliff.
After suffering an episode of severe backtrouble at the worst imaginable moment (my wife had just given birth to daughter) I went out and bought a Stokke

My old chair was as good as traditional chairs may go, but I haven't had any pain at all now for two years. And I sit on this beautiful constraption for at least eight hours a day.
