    They abolished the VB offshoot previously used (VBA) and replaced it with VBscript. This is generally a good thing since it gets rid of one more slightly different version of VB.

    The biggest difference is that VBscript doesn't allow you to type when you DIM an object, so the old:

    Dim rstRecordset as New recordset

    is invalid. You need to DIM and then set the objects in another line. Eg:

    Dim rstRecordset
    Set rstRecordset = CreateObject("ADODB.recordset")

    Sorry I can't remember offhand what the ProgID is for DAO stuff, although I guess you could give 'DAO.recordset'

    Or you can just make sure all the source is compiled in a 97 .mdb and 2000 should run it, although this'll bite you in the ass down the real.

    And when Q introduced the Borg by spinning the Enterprise into the Delta Quad (way before the warp six limit) they acknowledged that the introduction took place a hundred years before it should have.

    But it's not a federation restriction, it's allegedly a physics restriction.

    Allegedly, high warp speeds send you back in time (see Star Trek IV: Save the Whales) just like light speed would mess you up without wormholes. So then they invented the trans-warp bullshit which is to warp as warp is to normal space.

    Why would you want to punish the corporation instead of the executives? It's just an imaginary thing anyway.

    I'm sure the executives at Avant! would have rather had the corporation killed than having to pay $27 million dollars out of thier own pockets.

    That's why you form a corporation in the first place. The primary purpose of a corporation is not to IPO. It's to tranfer liability from you personally to this imaginary fixture.

    It actually is practical to make a bootdisk and install via ftp (unlike some other OS's that give you the option). Took about 20 minutes on DSL. So why waste your time grabbing an iso? (Yes, the source tree takes a little longer. That's where a CD comes in handy.)

    Not to be a know-it-all, but it actually does run under an local account called IWAP_machinename that's supposed to run with low privledges. But considering I just went through our webservers and removed "everybody-full control" (equivalent of Other-RWX) access from our (internal) webservers I don't know what low privledges are by default.

    You might want to take a look at the person who won won best director Oscars that year.

    The film also won best picture at the Oscars that year, and 2001 wasn't even nominated.

    So now we've seen two clearly quanitative pieces of data that indicate 2001 isn't really that good.

    I submitted a story about the 33rd aniversary of that movie two weeks ago, but the clueless slashdot staff dropped the ball again ;)

    Even if you assume that a Java binary will run exactly the same on all VM's (which it won't), as soon as you use JNI(which you'll have to do), it's instantly platform-dependant.

    A big part of American Democracy (at least in theory) is 'minority rights' Having regional representatives with regional influences helps protect minority rights.

    It would be nice if you could vote for any senator, but the trouble is that the only people who would get elected would meet the lowest common denominator. Look at the actual differences between GW Bush and Al Gore. This is what would happen to every election race if you ignored the region.

    Hawaii legalized gay marraiages, California leagalized medicinal marijuana. There are more than a few states where Ralph Nader could probably become govenor. But once you spread these ideologies across the whole US, the interests of the minority get ignored and swept under the rug.

    They're big banks who broker the IPO. They also esentially write one big check for all the stock and it's up to them to make sure investors buy it all.

    So if they can't find enough investors who are interested in X shares at Y price, they take the hit.

    It was marked "troll" because the FreeBSD philosophy is to make a high-performance x86 server, and it probably is the highest performance server you can set up on an x86 box.
