  1. the ACLU leads political activism technology on Scott Reents Holds Forth · · Score: 1
the ACLU makes it easy to email or fax your representitives about issues they've identified. i've actually received (snail)mail responses to my actions on their site.

you pick the topic you agree with, optionally customize the form letter, type in some address info, and they figure out who to fax it to and do the rest. this is my current favorite form of activism.

clearly, the ACLU is all over topics of interest to /. geeks.
  2. don't assume Amazon uses BEA for the retail site on On Building High Volume Dynamic Web Sites · · Score: 1

amazon has many disparate systems serving many needs for its business. do not assume that
transaction middleware was found necessary for running the frontend "retail" website (all the /exec/obidos links, which covers every new product line Amazon has ever entered). there is much business to be done behind the scenes to move all those books, there are other ("non retail") sections of the site, and there's more then one way to skin a cat.

  3. Re:I bet it works fine. on Linux Connectivity for the Visor · · Score: 1

when i dropped my Visor (ouch!), i just stuck a
Palm III in the serial port and hotsynched all my data to it.

    compatible enough? :)

  4. the computer will drive (Re:Computers and Cars...) on The Network is the Car · · Score: 1

if your car knows where it is, can find out where other cars are, and can see the road in some way, then you are not far from getting ditching the steering wheel for a command line interface.

it doesn't matter how much entertainment you have in the car, since you won't be driving it - unless you're doing *that* for entertainment value. in a few years, anyway.

  5. power to the people: micro-votes on Domain Resale for Fun and Profit(?) · · Score: 1

i think we should get rid of elections and just hand out voting points applicable to any current micro-issue, like here on slashdot. use *that* or lose it, baby! this voting system kicks ass.

hmm, i suppose we'd still need judges (or some independant review body) though, or else majorities could screw over minorities too easily.

this post has nothing to do about taxation.
