Erm, I don't know much about Dyson Spheres, except that they completely contain the energy from the star that they surround, but wouldn't a Dyson Sphere look almost identical to a black hole from a vast distance?
Any where in Space, virtual particles exist. These are pair of particles that are oppositesin all but mass and are created and annihilate each other. Occasionally, one partner is pulled into a black hole. If the other partner escapes, then that particle is promoted to a REAL particle and is said to be produced through Hawking Radiation.
Personally, I think that all these virtual particles have a significant effect on the ?U?niverse and could well be the explanation for Dark Matter.
Occam's Razor - The simplest explanation is usually the correct one.
Umm, what if a massive object moves in front of another object(eg a distant galaxy) and the galaxy appears to be distorted by the object's presence?
I think that lensing would be useful for the detecting of massive object, but it cannot be used for any form of measurement.
And FYI, they were on about lensing on the Sky At Night last Sunday as a way of detecting WIMPs and MACHOs. Not that I am entirely certain what MACHOs are, yet.
The Schwarzchild Radius is the radius that if a mass is compressed to within, the escape velocity exceeds the speed of light. The Event Horizon is the border between the region where an observer can 'observe' 'events' occuring near a black hole and where the observer can no longer 'observe' 'events'. Current theories suggest that these two only coincide for a non-rotating black hole as if the black hole is rotating, the space around the black hole is dragged along with it (Frame dragging) and the Event Horizon decreases in size.
However, the Event Horizon cannot ever reach a size of zero (exposing the Naked Singularity) as that would mean that the Black Hole would have an angular velocity equivalent to an energy of infinity!
Personally, I think that concentrating anything is a bad idea. Anyone heard the phrase "Don't keeps all your eggs in one basket"? If All knowledge is conentrated, then sooner or later, it's all going to go pear-shaped, same problem with power, any of those famous empires still around today? No? Wonder why?

Good thing it's not an active black hole, eh?
