  1. Re:Intel: Alpha vs IA-64 on Alpha Up For Grabs? · · Score: 1

Knowing the Compaq (DEC) Alpha's ability to support PALcode in firmware to translate instructions from one processor to another, (this is how VMS was successfully ported to the Alpha from VAX) I don't beleive that the Alpha would be sold.

Rather than support a whole family of different architectures, I think that Compaq could successfully run all 4 from its family of operating systems (VMS, Tru64 UNIX, Windows, and the ex-Tandem NonStop OS) all running on Alpha based machines.

I know Compaq is seeking out a simpler solution, but I don't think selling Alpha, and thereby probably killing it, is a viable option.

  2. small government anyone? on National Broadband Access · · Score: 2

With my libertarian ideals, I see internet access as a sector in which government has absolutely no role whatsoever. I would hate to see my tax dollars wasted by wiring every home in the country when it could be being spent on much more rewarding efforts such as direct funding to education. I love my high speed internet access, but I believe its expansion rate is satisfactory without the need for Big Brother to lease a deal of this magnitude to the lowest bidder. I cringe at the thought of my money being used to run cable into the most remote locations of my country for no better reason than my ruling authority can make a meaningless claim.

  3. Stick with Ma Bell on Northpoint Points South · · Score: 1

As a former Flashcom and Covad victim myself, I reluctantly decided to use BellSouth as my DSL provider. In six months, I can only remember one major outage (that only lasted a few hours), and i consistantly download at full speed (about 150-160KB). Atleast here in Atlanta, all the kinks seem to be ironed out, especially for $39.99 a month...

Of course right after I move off campus they decide to go and this. They need to extend the net a quarter mile off-campus so that my apartment would be covered... Chris G. chrisg@resnet.gatech.edu

  5. banners?? on Napster Offers $1B For Music-Swapping Rights · · Score: 1

Why not just stick banner ads in the windows and mac clients (wouldn't bother us linux users...)? I'm sure that would cover the $200 mil a year, and keep use users from having to pay a dime. Think of all the advertisers that would be chomping at the bit to get that kind of exposure...

  6. Atlanta Area geek apt complex on Constructing A Geek House · · Score: 1

Tilde, I live in an apartment complex next to GA Tech, where we have drilled holes through floors, ceilings, and walls to acheive a local 100Mbit network. 10 members so far....
