I don't think genetic code and source code should be treated the same. After all malicous sourcecode only hurts computers and inconvienices users. Genetic code effects us on a much more real level.
I can release code that has a bug in it and fix it pretty quicky. If it causes problems, it only causes problems. Meddling with life is not so trivial and the concequences can be fatal. It is for this reason that I am against open source genetics.
Does anyone know how to have the webserver return a constantly running stream of garbage?
I had heard of a guy taking chargen or/dev/random data and delivering it to some hacker that had hacked into his system (instead of what the hacker was trying to syphon off.) This would keep the connection open, and if enough people implemented it, would seriously limit their through put.
No digital rights management. Some rights are good and valid, some are abuses of copyright. Things will revert. it'll be "I can ___ in Linux, but I can;t in Windows."
No body trusts microsoft (I don't anyway) (This will become more important because.NET, Passport, and software subscriptions are going to be forced down people's throats while Linux remains free)
KDE3.0 will be ready when peoplr do descide to switch.
The new preemption patch rules!
The Linux software (and open source apps) will continue to be improved at a much faster rate than commericial apps.
Darwin will allow easy porting of Mac apps to Linux.
That since linux isn't there now, it can never be?
If anything is to be learned from the last 5 years of OpenSource, is that it is very dynamic and can play catch-up very quickly, usually measured in weeks.
We need an idiot version of linux. When you can fully run and configure a linux system without VI, Emacs, Pico, cat, grep - and do it all through a consistant well-thoughtout GUI will be the day that linux is ready for the corporate & home desktop.
Just take 10 camera at $16 ($160 total) and you will have a 3 megapixel camera. Then send each image through a a rendering algorithm where it is combines with the others, so you can get detail from the historisis from each camera.
After 30,000 years of having good comminucation skills, humans' finally revert to pre-historic communications skills. Their technology is responsible for thier de-cevilization. It seems a computer interface consisting of only grunts and primitive sounds was selected for windowsXP, and as a result the entire human vocabulary has reverted back to pre-historic roots.
Bill gates said "We are proud to be responsible for the conversion to a much easier language. While XML can organize our data better, we needed a common language for human interaction. Leveraging our power on the desktop, we we able to achive this." When asked about how aliens might perceive our change of language, Gates repsonded "I'm sure that they will appreciate the simplicity more. I mean, who ever liked French and all of it's eligance anyway?"
Well the idea is to use hailstorm to track you, deliver your pub key (*transparently*) to the webserver of which the download will come, and therefore the information will not be decryptable by other parties.
Or, another incarnation of this is to use hailstorm allthe time, so unlike my installsheild example, the file format will first be decrypted, and measures taken to prevent it from being copied from memory and shared.
Because you cannot diseminate the unecrypted data, sharing encrpyted files is useless to other people.
Microsoft will use thier monopoly, and be backed by nearly every company. Linux will be portraid as it one was - as a hacker thing. I'm expecting to find out that microsoft is sponsoring the SSSA. This way, Microsoft can squash Linux, and everyone except the linux hackers are happy.
Microsoft will build in DRM into all products. Everything you do will be encrypted only for you (or whom ever has your public key) Encryption will be transparent. That is, webservers will automatically encrypt any download as flagged to be under DRM.
Getting a DRM key will be something like a personal certificate. You'll pay for one from microsoft or verisign or some other party that will verify you before they give out the key (maybe a CCN is enough)
Installers like InstallSheild will have it built in. They will not hold entire files decryped in memory, by using a block cypher and only hold 1 block at a time, this getting the decryped content in its entirety will be hard.
Linux will have to adopt DRM is it is to remain legit against Microsoft. If it is not seen as legit, then no company (except for the embedders) are going to use Linux.
Rocks. I know - no linux, but seriously if you read/. then you're the type of person who wants a VCR on 'roids. That is a Replay box.the Tivo is lower and more moron oriented.
A friend of mine got a Tivo to my chagrin. He returned it 2 weeks later and got a replay. He's been happy since.
I just ordered service on 10/10/01 (MM/DD/YY or DD/MM/YY) They are even offering 2 months free - that's right free until 2002!! And the self-installation kit is free as well!
I have had problems with comcast service though, like 200ms ping times to my gateway. I blame it on the partment complex density though. I'm moving to a house in a near by neighborhood, and we'll see how that goes...

I thought they removed "Linux" from their name.
I also thought that they are pushing a closed source SourceForge for companies.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

My favorite browser! (Yeah, I know it's not OpenSource, but it does rule.)

Grunt snort grr grr.
This is illegal. Didn't you see the episode of the Sompsons where Homer got the autodialer?
