As for the tracking (which I work on, BTW), I challenge you to a) compare it with Fedex or USPS; b) tell us how to make it better.
Consider that there are *many* places on the planet that do not have radar coverage, the Pacific Ocean being a good example, many parts of Africa another. As a pilot, I can tell you that controllers make mistakes, usually because their 30 year old computers don't give them enough help.
Nothing beats looking out the window but if it prevents just one mid-air, it's worth it!
The US Navy keeps people on every ship trained in celestial navigation, you know, with a sextant and a mechanical watch to cover that risk!
