  3. Dreamcast Vs. PS2 on Sega To Form Joint Company With Nintendo? · · Score: 1

I just came back from my local Fry's Electronics and they had a display set up with a PS2 and a Dreamcast. Knowing that they were going to sell all of the PS2's they could get their hands on. (There we none left when I got there, surprise.) They set up a Dreamcast vs. PS2 display. The PS2 got a shitty used display TV set and they hooked the Dreamcast up to a nice Trinitron monitor and uped the resolution. (They were both about 19 inches.) This is pretty damn sweet, I didn't know you could do that with the Dreamcast so it was cool they did it anyway.

That aside my point of this whole damn thing is, I wouldn't count Dreamcast dead yet, the more people that have Dreamcasts the more people that are going to want games. With PS2's shortage this holiday season there are going to be a LOT of people *settling* for the Dreamcast. Especially being so much damn cheaper.

  4. Screw This on ICANN Board Members Squat · · Score: 2

Is anyone else tired of this BS? You know what I am tired of the most is the blatant exploitation of *our* the "geek" communities hard work in created all that is the damn internet, and now that there is profit to be had we get thrown aside like pricks trying to fuck up their *property*. Corporations, politicians, and non-profit organizations!

I say we split! Why the hell haven't we? Fork off a new Internet. (Internet2 doesn't count) Get back to basics. A place where source is open, ideas are free and remain free and it is all voluntary. A place that from the start declares If your looking for profit, fuck off.

I know, maybe offtopic. mod me down, maybe someone will read this. Maybe someone will find some inspiration. That's I can hope.

So how about it? Would it be possible for a second ICANN to be formed by people that care about the common good?

How about a new internet with a Declaration of Independence right from the start that says We the people say we are unbound by your countries laws, anything you put in is owned by all, this is a free-for-all baby!

I know, it will never even come close to becoming a reality, but it sounds good doesn't it?

  5. Re:Government funding of science and the arts on Presidential Answers, Round One · · Score: 1

I think we need to take a serious look at what we fund. Which companies have built giant telescopes to look for black holes? Or what company is going to spend the cash to find out if gravity waves exist or not? Do we benefit from these things as a nation and the human race. Hell yes.

Look at the space program. Many people say it was/is a waste of money. Sure getting from point A to point B didn't we didn't reap a lot of benefits, but look at the technology we accumulate along the way, everything from space metals to Tang! Sure private companies are starting to take some interest in space now, for launching satellites and such, but look how long it took them. I don't see many commercial companies trying to land stuff on the Mars. You might not see the benefits now but they will be there in the future.

I think these tasks though should fall back onto our education system. The funding for these projects should be directed at Universities and even local High Schools and Private Schools that want to take a stab at scientific research. True, we spend more on science and the Arts than we should, but maybe we just need to redirect the money to were the need is greatest, where there isn't any public sector interest.

  6. You forgot some games... on Slashback: Injunction, Waivers, Black Hole · · Score: 1

You HAVE to include Super Mario Bros. I think that is required. Did anyone else ever time themselves on how quickly they could beat that game and then try to beat their record?

Don't forget also, Blaster Master, if you never played Blaster Master you really missed out. I miss games where the plot was the chase your pet frog turned evil Mutant down a hole into another dimension in a crazy futuristic space tank. Instaling technological upgrades along the way. I think that was the game that really broke the linear-level mold for the first time.

And my third requirement would be Contra. There is no denying that was one of the coolest/funest side-scrollers ever created. Just pure alien blasting fun.

I hope they don't settle out of court. It would be nice to have a multi-billion dollar mega-monopoly on the side of freedom for once. I wonder though how Time Warner feel about being sued for what it is suing napster for? If they do go on the defense do you think this could hurt their case, or are they so mega-huge that the courts would consider the two sections of the mega-coporation diffrent mega-entities?

Microsoft would be very smart to port their office software about now. With the recent open-sourcing of StarOffice they may lose their monopoly over the office software market in a year or so. (You know, like IE did when mozilla was open sourced...) Seriously though as far as IE goes, the reason it doesn't have 95+% of the market share is because most all unix users can use only netscape/mozilla (Sure there are others but not as good.) There are always going to be the die-hard not going to use a M$ product to save my life users. But Microsoft has never gave a crap about them anyway. With linux getting easier and easier to use by the day, more and more people who are willing to use IE will be using Linux, Microsoft is not not going to want to miss out on that market share.
