No kidding, and they should definitely publish a link to this white paper when it's complete. Then we can all use it in our presenations, while claiming that we wrote the thing.;)
Those original Americans (no offence meant to Native Americans) left an opressive government to start their own that made more sense for the common man.
Umm IIRC, "Those original Americans" rebelled against an oppressive government in order to come to America and set up their own oppressive government. Except those cleaver guys and gals disguised it as a church.
"we'll be rolling out a variety of new features such as message posting and enhanced newsgroup browsing."
Reading this statement makes it sound like Google is preparing to transform a historically public and open forum into a proprietary gateway.
Praise Google all you'd like for saving the archive and adding "features", but I'd be weary of how they manage this system and it's content in the future. The acquisition will probably do just as much for USENET as Geocities has done for quality web publishing.
I worked the PC support desk at a large PC manufacturer for about a year, and I can think of many examples when this would not suffice.
1.) Processor is not seated properly = No Post
2.) Modem or NIC is messed up = No Connection
3.) Customer is checking the status of a work order = No use for remote admin
4.) Customer is lonely & wants to chat = I'm a social worker...

As most people in the/. crowd are generally concerned with civil liberties and personal freedoms, I'm curious as to why you would make such a statement. Isn't the right to speak your mind, just as important as the right to speak it without being identified? People should be able to say whatever they want, and still have the OPTION of remaining anonymous if they are speaking about something personal and would like not to be unfairly singled out/identified.
"I suggest that we embrace the criminals for this campaign. The fact that Bin Laden and criminals like the mafia use encryption make it into a sexy field again, like it was in the 1920's through 40's, say."
You just clearly stated that we should embrace Bin Laden for using encryption. Please think about what you are saying, especially w/ headers like "Follow my Logic."
You have suggested that we support someone who has openly launched a campaign to kill any and all Americans simply b/c they are American.
There are many anti consultant posts to this question, so I'll play devils advocate just for the heck of it.
Many companies outsource a large portion of their technical needs to half-competent consultants because, even with the problems and mistakes, it's still cheaper than hiring a full timer. Companies are continually finding that ousourcing is extremely economical.
One thing that still confuses me when discussing these new technologies which will prevent us from copying and storing our digital music collections is, we already have the hardware/software to do such things. So what if Intel or IBM has a new way to encrypt a music file?? All that means is I won't use their sofware to rip or encode my music.
I don't see the compact disc going away anytime soon, so as long as I've got CD's and the software I currently use to rip music, things will be ok. The RIAA is going to have to come to my house, format my hard drive, and trash my backups if they want to get rid of the software which I currently own and use.
I believe you are actually referring to Yoo Hoo.
unless that was a joke, in which case, all apologies.
