  1. Re:Non sequitur on 'Hacking' To Be Declared Illegal · · Score: 2
Proposition 36 on the california ballot this year:

Drugs. Probation and treatment program. Iitiative statute.

Requires probation and drug treatment, not incarceration, for possession, use, transportation of controlled substances and similar parole violations, except sale or manufacture. Authorises dismissal of charges after completion of treatment. Financial impact: Net annual savings of $100 million to $150 million to the state and about $40 million to local governments. Potential avoidance of one time capital outlay costs to the state of $450 million to $550 mailliion.

if this passes, thousands of people, instead of being locked up, will be helped. it's better than nothing, and outpatient treatment is potentially a whole lot cheaper than jail time. taxpayers win, drug users get help. the jail space is reserved for people more deserving (i.e. rapists, murders, thiefs, et al) Someone was thinking when they thought of that one.

actually, not even the same speed and class will suffice, AFAIK, you need to be within the same stepping, too. just buy both processors at the same time from the same place, unless their stock is really screwed up, the chips will be good.

oh, and on the ram, unfortunately the PII/PIII aren't cut that cleanly with bus speeds.

PII 233-333MHz use 66Mhz bus speeds
    PII 350-450 and pIII 450 - 800 use 100MHz bus
    pIII 600 - 933 use 133MHz bus speeds.
that means that the 600 and 800 are available in both 100 and 133 bus speeds.
i've been out of the market for a couple months, but last i checked, there's anoter consideration after chip speed and bus speed. form factor: slot 1 or fpga socket370 "flip chips"
basically that's the difference between a cartrige that plugs into a slot or a chip that plugs into a socket. the flip chips are generally cheaper.

no, i'not karma whoring, i'm helping

  4. Re:No more age verification. on Electronic Signatures Now Legal? · · Score: 1
So I should no longer need to use my credit card to verify my age (Yahoo! made me do that to use my spam-trap email account). Now I can just digitally "sign" an affirmation of my age, right?
the thing is, a signature of a minor is not legally binding. therefore, if you're underage and signing that you're old enough, it don't work.
