  1. Subversion / Bitkeeper on Microsoft to Buy Rational and/or Borland? · · Score: 1

I'm curious. How does ClearCase stack up against Bitkeeper or Subversion? If anyone can speak on it, I'd like to know. :)

  2. Used for telephone systems on OS/2 Going, Going... Gone · · Score: 1

It's been several years ago, but there it was, OS/2 2.l running the software for the voicemail and the phone system for a company I used to work for... never really had a complaint with it. It just worked.

  3. Slippery Slope on Slashdot Updates · · Score: 1

Well, Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda, congratulations. I can only guess that you have been told by corporate that these changes need to occur. Of course, if my cynical supposition is wrong, please let me know.

With that being said, I don't *mind* paying for something of value. Clearly, I think Slashdot has value because I visit this site everyday. However, what will you offer for a subscription? Is it merely advertising elimination? If it is, then the subscription better be pretty damned cheap (less than $10 a year, just a guess).

I'd have to agree with other posters as well, the minute you have pop-ups, or the advertising gets too intrusive, I'm dropping Slashdot like a rock. Wouldn't it be the ultimate irony if CmdrTaco had to use pop-ups after ranting about how much he hates them?

Like most folks that visit Slashdot, I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt.

  4. Vorbis sounds better IMHO on What Sounds Better, MP3 or Ogg? · · Score: 1

    Well,

I would have to say that after doing 256kbps mp3's for the longest time and then doing variable rate .ogg files, I like ogg much better. It may be psychological, but I liked the format enough to switch my entire CD collection to it. I was also "wise" enough to refrain from buying a portable mp3 player, or other gadget that only plays mp3s, so I'm not at a loss there either. I'm willing to wait for a device that will play Vorbis files, but for now, listening to my music at work and home is sufficient for me.

  5. Server pie gets smaller and now with fewer players on HP Buys Compaq · · Score: 2, Interesting

Was thinking about the ramifications of this merger, and thought I'd look for some server market share statistics ( http://serverwatch.internet.com/news/2001_08_02_a. html ).

You have Compaq, Dell, IBM, HP, Sun, and the "Others" category.

Now we shall have Dell, IBM, HP, Sun, and "Others".

This stat is entitled "Preliminary Worldwide Server Unit Shipment Estimates for 2Q01", and both HP and Compaq lost market share. Looking at market share off of this chart, HP would then have 37.3% of Server Units shipped (estimate). That alone makes HP all of the sudden the #1 company with servers shipped for Q'2 2001. Impressive...
Also note that the stats I am referring to are for the worldwide market.

Of course, I'll stick with my commodity Dell servers, and (if need be) Sun/IBM Unix servers.

  6. Borders Has Lost My Business on Borders to Use CCTV Face Recognition · · Score: 1

This is a disturbing trend, at it's best... downright scary, at it's worst.

I will not be patronizing Borders, and I will urge my friends to do the same. Also, I will be writing a letter to them stating that they have just lost my business, and that I would only reconsider going back if they were to remove this technology from their stores. Follow the money, and vote with your pocketbooks!

  7. Re:I've been doing fine... on Red Hat Linux 7 Infested With Bugs · · Score: 2

Same here. I downloaded the 2 iso's from ibiblio.org, did a clean install of the old Dell workstation at work, and couldn't be happier. I'm actually installing it on an old HP Vectra 486/25NI upgraded with a Pentium OverDrive chip, with 3 NIC's. Why would I do such a thing? Download the latest 2.4.0-test kernel, get the user space iptables code, and go to town.

As for the servers at work, yes, they will not be upgraded to 7.0 for at least a little while. Each .0 release, IMO, has gotten better by a factor of 10.

As for the number of bugs, all I'm concerned about are 1. the showstoppers, and 2. the security bugs. So far, I haven't seen any (doesn't mean they aren't there, but I haven't been bitten by one yet).

  8. Settle this ala Braveheart style! on Public Debate Between Valenti and Lessig · · Score: 1

I haven't even heard the webcast, but I _was_ watching Braveheart DVD...

just imagining Jack Valenti as the guy with the chevron presenting terms of surrender, and Lawrence Lessig as William Wallce telling this prick off in the Battle of Stirling gives me a chuckle :-) Of course, this would _probably_ be a lot more bloody and nasty than the WWF scenario posted earlier!:-)
