  1. You do what you have to do.... on When Should You Quit Your Job? · · Score: 1

is a load of crap. The real statement should read "You do what you have to do in your chosen field, until you get to do what you want to do in your chosen field!". The only problem is that in life you can take on dependencies (family members who rely on your health care and/or constant paycheck) as well as not focusing the part about your chosen field.
I went INSANE doing tech support in a very corporate business environment in the hopes that I could move up to programming. From there I hoped to fill out my programming resume enough to switch to a company that did computer games. I never had enough time to really concentrate on programming and every time I sat in front of a computer I would hear myself asking, "ok, I need you to check and see if it is plugged in...". I have since quit that job and I am moving to another city in order to get on with a game company that is growing. I have no regrets except for the amount of time I put in doing a job that was actively devouring my soul...

So, if you aren't in the specific field you want to be, try and line up a job that IS in your chosen field first. However, don't let 'em devour too much of your soul before you split!!!

  2. I like definition number 2 on Are Programmers Engineers? · · Score: 1

    From Meriam webster:
    Main Entry: 1 engineer

1 : a member of a military group devoted to engineering work
    2 obsolete : a crafty schemer : PLOTTER
3 a : a designer or builder of engines b : a person who is trained in or follows as a profession a branch of engineering c : a person who carries through an enterprise by skillful or artful contrivance
4 : a person who runs or supervises an engine or an apparatus

Considering that I always wait for a patch before buying a product nowadays I like definition number 2!!!!

  3. Spammers, free speach freedom fighters?!?!? on Spamming Gets Expensive in Utah and Ohio · · Score: 1

A recent court decision came down on the side of long distance phone carries who relentlessly call people who are perfectly happy with thier current LD carriers. If I recall correctly (that means I couldn't find the original artical) the suit was based on a state passing a law impossing fines and/or restrictions on who and when the companies could call. ....So here is the tightrope, get spammers (and the companies that back them) to get spam and thus HTML code recognized as free speech at these companies expense. Then use that as a precedent for other types of code thus saving the EFF some serious bucks! Is spam a small enough price to pay for this?

  4. Did anyone else catch this? on Free Software Inflates BSA's Piracy Claims · · Score: 1

Globally, it says, software piracy fell $US1 billion to $10.97 billion due to a "decline in software prices making the benefits of original software more compelling against the risks of software piracy and the effects of a worldwide economic slowdown", the groups say.

I wonder, if Windows XP Professional was $50 US (Hell if it was even $75 US) instead of $299 how much that would cut BSA's piracy figures by?

  5. Third Generation Games on X-Box Limitations (Hemos Is Dumb) (Yes, I am) · · Score: 1

In my experience with buying game systems the really good games don't come out until the second or third generation. (about a year to two after the system is released) It seems that is when designers have a good handle on the ins and outs of programming. None the less I am gonna wait for the Nintendo cube, but then I am a Zelda addict!
