  1. One more time: on Austria Bans Spam · · Score: 1

Puting spam labels on emails DOES NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. Spam is still being sent a recieved, which takes up bandwidth and HD space.

Every time you guys post this half-solution you are just spreading a bad meme AND people that have a clue have that much more work to do cleaning up after you.

You have a big soapbox here, so think before you speak.

I come from Bellingham, WA (the first real US city south of Vancouver) and I agree with the statement that Vancouver has the most horrible drivers.

Whenever I get cutoff, or see a red-light run, or just about any other idiocy you can do with a car, I can ususally count on seeing Canadian plates.

That would rock! It would cut WAY down on the "fragmentation of Linux" that everyone is complaining about if there was a way to port the hardware to the software, rather than vice versa.

  5. You're all forgetting one thing.... on SDMI as Dead As DivX · · Score: 1
Many of your arguments hinge on the claim that MP3's are better for the consumer on nearly every level: technological, economic, etc, etc, etc. But makes no difference.

Others correctly appeal to the "entrenchedness" of MP3's. This is a better argument--but it is here that we lose.

MP3's are entrenched, but only on the Internet. By far far far the vast majority of music is not Internet-delivered MP3's, it is RIAA-controlled media (CDs and whatnot). Also the vast majority of the market is not able to take delivery of Internet MP3's (because they are not connected, connected by a 28.8, or just plain unaware of the technology).

What this means is that the RIAA can saturate the non-MP3-using-Internet-geek market with SDMI.

Only two things can save us:
    • Not caring: As with Linux, do your own thing. You can still record MP3's via audio output and trade them with your friends. The downsides are that MP3's won't be a "recognized standard" and someone will have to be the sacrificial lamb that makes the first copy.
    • Educate the masses: I think this is probably what killed DIVX. Geeks are in the minority numerically, but for some issues they can wield majority power. They do this by being the local "guru" for family, friends etc. These friends as the geek "So, what do you think about SDMI?" If that geek say "forget about it", he is wielding two votes at once--one his own, and one his friend's.

  6. This is bad news... on Historic "Free Unix" white paper by Larry McVoy · · Score: 1

If McVoy was correctly predicting 1999 in 1993, does that mean that he is currently correctly predicting 2005 in 1999? Because, if so, Open Source is in trouble. Isn't he the creator of BitKeeper, the non-free source management software?

It's true that you'll need to read certain key books in order to understand certain characters. Here's a partial list, from memory.

    • Rincewind: Colour of Magic
    • Librarian: Colour of Magic
    • Death: Mort
    • Cut-Me-Own-Throat Dibbler: Something fairly early, probably Guards, Guards will do
    • Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg: Equal Rites; Wyrd Sisters
    • The wizards (all interchangable AFAIAC): Equal Rites; Sourcerer; Colour of Magic
    • Ankh-Morpork (w/ Guilds): Again, something early, try Guards, Guards

    Well, that's a starting point....

"Small Gods" is much better than "Feet of Clay". I found FoC difficult to follow (although with a good thesis and ending). SG, OTOH, is incredibly funny AND thought-provoking throughout.
