So I'm just wondering, will Magic Lantern display the traditional FBI copyright warning prior to logging your keystrokes?

No it's not illegal, just a breech of contract. It's not illegal to break a contract, though you may be liable for penalties provided for in that contract.

Perhaps I'm just parenoid, and I'm probably wrong, but does anyone else think this looks like a con? LinuxFreak is registered to someone on Oklohoma, and all the information about this incident seems to be comming from either that article or his own website.
And what's up with LinuxFreak trying to give me PayPal cookies?

Even if this is legitimate, I don't think it'll be long before someone comes up with some BS story to make the hacker community feel like their rights are being trampled on, and then, by the way, I need money for a legal defense. Put out some less-than favorable press to give the story some cover, to make it look legitimate. People don't verify their facts very often even in the mainstream press, much less on-line, and I've yet to see any mention of this story anywhere that isn't directly traceable back to either the LinuxFreak website or Brian K West's website.

I'm probably wrong, but something just doesn't seem right about this, and it's about time for someone to abuse the legal defense fund to defend our freedom thing to steal money. I think that if this guy's legitimate, then he should get the EFF (or some similar, reputable organization) involved, and then we could donate to them for his legal defense.

If I'd be sceptical about it in an email - them I'm skeptical about it on a web site.

A toddy is basically a big plastic container that's big enough to hold about 1/2 lb of coffee and a half gallon of water (they do make larger ones of course. it has a hole in the bottom of it that you place a cork into while you're brewing it and there's a re-usable filter that fits just above the cork hole. The coffee should be ground coarsely for this brewing... I think that's to make it easier to drain. For more info: http://www.thecajunconnection.com/toddy.html

Nah, I brew mine with cold water in the refrigerator. I put 1/2 lb coffee in a toddy and let it sit in my fridge for 24 hours.... makes about a half gallon or so of the best damn coffee I've ever had. Using cold water prevents (or so I've been told) prevents as many of the acids from being extracted from the beans and (supposedly) that's what gives coffee a bitter taste.

Some people will use a whole pound and then dilute their coffee, but watering down coffee seems.... wrong somehow....

  6. An incentive to hardware companies on New Microsoft Feature: Planned Obsolescence · · Score: 1

It occurs to me that this would be an incentive to computer manufacturers to continue selling computers with Windows pre-installed. Computer companies now are having problems with people keeping their computers too long, 5 or 6 years (and longer.) What an incentive to upgrade your PC if the operating system doesn't work anymore. And if you're a computer manufacturer, wouldn't you want your machine to need replacing after 3 years...especially if it's "not our fault... that's just how Windows is..." You get customers being forced to buy your hardware again, you don't have to continue supporting old hardware, AND it's not your fault. I know I'd be tempted...

  7. Re:It's is DEFINATLY and COMPLETELY about control! on FCC Approves AOL-Time Warner Merger · · Score: 1

I do agree that it's always about control. But it's not just about corporations buying power in the government. I think that if you concentrate on them too much you miss the real power in this country - the under- and mis-informed public. Demagogues demonize industries they have economic intrests in (like Gore was with the oil industry) to gain more control over those industries while helping out their own companies.
Notice that it's the media that's being allowed to expand their reach with fewer checks.
Won't this give those politicians the media favors the ability to get more favorable press coverage? With campaign finance reform looking to limit the amount of coverage a candidate can buy, the press will be in a position to exert even more control over the information we get on a daily basis.
And consolidations of media outlets like this allow that power to be in the hands of even fewer people. Means fewer diverging points of view. Means the masses will be more likely than ever to believe about any cr@p thay're fed.

I'm sure there's a great conspiricy out there driving this (and I'm just upset that I'm not part of it!)
