  1. Re:India: The land where police protect criminals on India's Digital Village · · Score: 1

A very dogmatic way to look at the situation. The people overthrew the previous government because rural development was ignored. Claiming that the rural people in India are against technolgy per se is a bigoted opinion. People will always accept technology if it is beneficial to them, whichever land they may come from.

  2. The tenth planet? on Defining "Planet" · · Score: 1

What happened to the tenth planet? It was claimed to be bigger than Jupiter and had made big news back then (2000?). Where the hell did it disintegrate off to?

As far as I can see, there were only two main modes of communication used: The Internet(alongwith email) and Mobile text messaging. Now, that's also possible in most of the countries I know of! Isn't it?

  4. Re:Why use anything other than Linux for comp sci? on Aussie Uni Dumps Dual-Boot In Favor of Linux · · Score: 1

Agreed that it is the best operating system for comp sci. But that's not where it ends. Our electrical engineering dept. has been on linux for quite a some time now. There are some real good open source tools ( SPICE, MAGIC, IRSIM etc.) out there, which are actively used in the academic arena. We can't afford commercial software, nor can we spend on high-end servers. As a result, PC's running on linux (with open-source tools) is the best solution.

What about those irritating popup ads? I would also like them to be classified as spam. They do the same amount of damage, if not more - to the end user. Or is the definition of spam restricted to the e-mail mode only?

  6. Too Utopian? on Who Owns Science? · · Score: 1

Free and unrestricted access is definitely music to the ears! But is it possible in the current era? Can an institution survive without revenue generation? Unless, of course, if it has a source which keeps doling out those million dollar grants!
