  1. Remember the Running Man on Avatar Me: Photorealistic Quake Skins · · Score: 2

OK, we need the paranoid point of view, so here it is. I have been saying for a few years that we aren't far off in computing ability to make the Running Man scenerio a real possibility. While it might be really neat to have yourself scanned so that you can plug it into a game, you need to ask yourself who might have access to your scan besides you? I would imagine that the scanning process is hi res enough so that someone with enough computing power could insert you into security camera footage and make it look real. So much for an alibi. I imagine that the Spooks are drooling over this and are trying to figure out how to incorporate high speed scans into something like airport metal detectors. Before you discount me as a paranoid anti-government freak, ask yourself if the capabilities are real.

  2. No! It's the European banking families and the FED on The Corporate Republic · · Score: 1

The banks control the world because they control the money. By allowing the banks to control your money, you allow then to regulate the value of your money. The Federal Reserve Act of 1913 was a horrific coup of the US Government, and it went completely unnoticed. The Federal Reserve Act sold the exclusive rights to US Currency to a group of private banking families and remains a private institution to this day. The FED is NOT a government institution. Look for the FED in your local telephone directory and you will not find it in the government section, but in the business section right next to Federal Express (which isn't a part of the US Government any more than the FED). You make several valid points in your argument, except for your incorrect perception of the Libertarian Party. Where do your ideas that Libertarians are pirates and thieves come from? One of their strongest points is a person's right to enter a contract with another person without the intrusion of government. If you need any further clarification, you should read the Libertarian Party Platform found here: http://www.lp.org/platform/ You just might learn something about what little liberty you have left.

  5. Re:Samba Passwords vs. System Passwords on Using Samba · · Score: 1

I read that Samba can now be configured to use domain authentication when connecting a Samba box to an existing NT domain. You need to use smbpasswd to add the machine to the NT domain and set "security=domain" in your smb.conf. See "security=domain" under http://us1.samba.org/s amba/docs/man/smb.conf.5.html#security for details. I'm not sure if this helps at all, but good luck.

  6. Re:Very Interesting, but for guitar? on More Channels for The Digital Musician · · Score: 1

I totally agree. By using A/D on the instrument, you still maintain all of the dynamics of the signal, with much less loss and noise being introduced. The noise associated with the A/D and D/A between guitar and amp is negligible compared to the AC hum and RF interference that I'm used to . A loud 60Hz hum on top of the local urban station with a little bit of taxicab radio conversations thrown in will not be missed by me. Any Chicago players out there remember the Avalon?

  7. Re:What about fire wire on More Channels for The Digital Musician · · Score: 1

They selected Cat 5 over Firewire because of the length restrictions. Cat 5 is approximately 100 meters, whereas Firewire is only a few feet. Imagine a rock guitarist with a 3 or 5 foot cable.
As far as the power distibution, they are using pins 7 and 8 to carry the required power. This was decided upon due to their non-use in standard computer hardware. This prevents anyone from frying a NIC by sending it 24V on a data line. And you know that people are going to try to plug them straight into their NICs in spite of their incompatibility.

  8. Re:Licensing on More Channels for The Digital Musician · · Score: 1

By what I gathered from this article, they are looking to perform an A/D conversion at the sound source. In doing so, you get the true sound of the source, be it a guitar pickup or a drum or vocal mic. This is very different from a MIDI pickup that just sends control data to a sound generation device. This scheme would allow for a sixteen mic drum setup to be run down a single Cat 5. This system would also allow for conversion of existing instruments. I could see an A/D module complete with volume and tone pots to replace the existing controls in a guitar. Pull the existing guts, solder your pickup leads to the module and plug in your Cat 5 cable. Vintage Les Paul sound with onboard A/D, probably for less than a hundred bucks. No router required.

  11. By Cyrix, do you mean the MediaGX???? on Ask Slashdot: Linux on Mobos w/ Integrated Sound & Video. · · Score: 1

I run a MediaGX 180MHz just fine with Linux. The sound is not supported yet to my knowledge, but I haven't checked in several weeks. I run a separate video card because the GX only has 2MB of video ram, and I have a Millenium II 8MB card. XFree86 3.3.3 is supposed to support the GX, but I haven't tried that yet either. This system runs Linux very well and I have never had any problems that I didn't personally cause (hey, ya' gotta break it a few times to find out the big no no's).
