  1. In the long run...... on Microsoft Is Indoctrinating Children, Shouldn't We? · · Score: 1

Besides, in the long run with the budgets of schools as tight as they are, they are sure to look at free open source software to meet there computerization needs.

Also, the true nerd will be attracted to the system he can fool around with more and make his own additions to. And what better for that than LINUX and other open source systems. So, I think in the long run this Microsoft program is going to help the industry as a whole and not just MS.

I disagree. (Not that I'm working at one of these big computer manufacturers and thus have a stake in computer sales rising consistently.) All this increasingly powerful hardware that is being manufactured finally translates into better applications reaching more number of people. And for this they have to have this improved hardware. Why ? Well, it's finally all a question of choice. Man constantly endevours to reduce the noice in his life to concentrate on the signal. The everyday mundane tasks being the noice and what he really wants to do the signal. As for the developing countries, you should see the dramatic changes in the lives of the common people the very useful applications on computers, being deployed are bringing about.(I'm from India.) For eg., farmers. The internet is being used to connect then directly with whole sale dealers, eliminating the middleman. That gives them far better prices and better market info, quicker. This sure improves their living condition.

Well, most propably, in the next few years most of the cube guys will be tele-commuting most of the time in any case; from whereever we are, home, out camping, on the beach ?!? ;-) That would sure make a lotta difference to the attitude and overall mental condition.

Hi Mr. Crawford. That's a very useful organization you have told us about. I'm from India and as you know we have a lot of people here who have the potential to become good in software development. The biggest problem in my country is easy availability of hardware and software. Reason being the relatively higher cost and larger no of people who can't afford it. Just imagine the benefits of free h/w and s/w available in every city to all these people who can't afford it right now. The global shortage of IT manpower would be history. The free h/w exchange will also be handy towards this end. Can I start a chapter of YNC in India ?
