It's buggy, full of badly written and non-standards based code. 90% of the trouble with email I get calls from users on is Outlook's fault.

I want standards based stuff, NOT to throw HP's linux based crap on top of Microsoft's Win95 based crap.

I'll wait for the open source community to write a 'better than outlook' program, using standard, like POP3, IMAP, vcal, etc... the only reason it hasn't happened is that people keep trying to make Outlook work.

I think that would be a very useful thing. Sort of like moderators on Slashdot. The need for negative feedback is clearly seen here, as well as positive feedback. Something as simple as +1 and -1 works very well here. If I came across a page that was way off the topic (say a keyword spammed porn site) I could say "irrelevant - porn site" and it would negative rate that page.... etc. And again, like Slashdot's threshold, the ability to look below the threshold is critical. Yes, you might negative weigh some pages wrongly, but someone could reweigh those (reset to zero? or plus 1?) so that they'd come back into the 'normal' view. Hmmm... I think a slashdot moderation based search engine would be great. You would have the same limit we have here: Can't moderate your own urls, only a limited number of points at a time. Moderation checks and balances. Etc. Rob or Hemos... remember me if you end up the next Jerry Yang! Seth

Ken is one of the brightest talents in the security community, has worked tirelessly for years on security related issues and has freely shared his

To pull his site and prohibit him from accessing his own content is outrageous.

As a professional network administrator, I used his site services at least once a day, and found his content to be professional accurate and trustworthy. His content helped me PROTECT MY NETWORK, and according to all reports, you've destroyed all of his content, his hard work, and a RESOURCE that I used. This is absurd. His content, regardless of libelousness, existed BEFORE it came to Harvard's domain, and libel suit threat aside, destroying data like that is a crime. If you wanted it removed, pull the plug on the machine, and RETURN the data to Ken.

Open Source works when you follow the principles that it's based on. Netscape didn't, and has paid the price - it's slowly getting better, but I can't use Mozilla today INSTEAD of Netscape 4.6, which if they'd done it right, we'd be able to.

Regarding ICQ, ICQ was reverse engineered, so even if AOL stopped it tomorrow, we could still have 3rd party software, clients AND servers, and keep it alive. Same goes with advertising on it, etc. Basically, the day they screw it up, I will ICQ all of my friends, give them my new server address, and a link to a free clone of icq, and we'll all switch to that.

I buy 10,000 shares of Redhat, or 10,000 shares of 'Linux.Business.whatever.inc' and now I have the incentive to help make laws that protect those companies. If the average 'suit' doesn't have a stake in GPL_using companies, he doesn't have a stake in insuring that the GPL is soundly legal and well supported.

For instance: Someone sues Redhat over patent infringement on a GPL'ed program they distribute.
They sue Redhat because Redhat has money, as opposed to FSF or Debian who have nothing. As a Redhat Stockholder, it is in my selfinterest to get laws passed that protect Redhat's position.
Thus I will help get GPL protecting laws passed.
And fight software patent laws at the same time.

Dave's point on why they don't use GPL'd code right now: Because the legal shakiness means people don't want to put all their eggs in one basket. Try convincing your boss to let you use GPLed code inside your product, and watch how the legal aspects tied everything up in knots. It's not that the GPL is so bad, it's that people don't trust it because it's legally untested and unprotected still.

P.S. Substitute BSD, Artistic, other open_license for GPL as you wish. Do not substitute APSL, NPL, other_barely_Open, as you wish. :)

p.p.s. I am a big fan of GPL. I personally think it'll stand up court, should it ever come to it.

If they stall upgrading, the local cable commissions can pull the franchise from them. Right now, local boards are loathe to do this over a matter of a channel or 2 of television. After all, the hassles of forcing the existing cable company out because some customers can't get VH-1 or maybe another 'adult' channel, doesn't seem worth it, but if AT&T or one of these major players is withholding internet access because they don't want to share... I suspect that will galvanize many of the board members to say "put up or get out" finally. Many local boards are disgusted with the 'public access' channels fiascoes (such as public access that isn't very public, requiring people to buy descramblers), and when they understand that 'internet' access is being withheld, I think that will be the straw that broke the camelcable's back.
