I'd bet the internet hype was one of the biggest factors in the pc industry's growth the last decade. Almost all the non-techie people I know use thier machines just to access the web.
I think most of them realized that the internet isn't all it's cracked up to be. And you don't need a top of the line machine to watch porn.
Seeing the machine you paid $2000 for last year on sale for $400 probably doesn't do much for consumer confidence either.
