You just need a brain to comprehend stuff, not a PhD. However, being enrolled into a University enables you to read for _free_ all the scientific journals you like (Science, Nature, PNAS, JACS and whatever else) to get more details on what you are reading on pupular science ones.
And you can even become the one that writes those articles:o)
