I always liked the Unleashed series for Linux, helped me get started so many years ago:). As far as coding goes, If you're looking to get started coding and don't have any experience, get a book that's set up like a text book (or just get a school text book). It's easier to measure your progress if the chapters have tests and quizes at the end. Also, if you're doing coding, I've found that having two books on hand helps, one big thick $50 something or other as an in depth reference, and then some tiny lil $20 learn C++ in 5 mins, etc, as a quick reference.
