Most likely it is not illegal. HAMs are allowed to transmit at extremely high wattages. However, he is not allowed to cause interference and you have to accept interference. I'm sure if you talked to him you could come to a compromise.

So a Chevy Metro will pay the same as a Lincoln Navigator? How is this fair to pay for roads? The Navigator should and currently does pay more towards roads.

  3. Some sites deserve to get slashdotted. on The Ultimate Computer Chair? · · Score: 1

Hmmmmm. I wonder why it's slashdotted. Could it be the fact that their main page is comprised of 40 images? Who creates these web pages?

Great. Does anyone else think that this sensational journalism is going hurt funding for things like this when it misses us by 5 million km?

  5. The problem is packet loss on Traffic Shaping on DSL? · · Score: 1

The problem is that he computer is sending more traffic than the upload cap on the modem and it is discarding some packets. When the outbound ACKs get dropped you get retransmission problems. Changing the window size and such will not solve the problem. He cannot prioritize which packets get dropped by the modem so he is correct in asking for traffic shaping so that he caps his upload to 30 or 40 kilobits below his cap, leaving room for acks to go out.

The wavelength (frequency) of the microwaves is what makes it excite water. I'm sure they would not be using the same wavelength to transmit energy from space to earth. Clouds and water vapor in the air would affect it.

  7. Social setting important on Do You Consider Your Social Life When You Choose A Career? · · Score: 1

When searching for a job, the first thing I decided was where I wanted to live. I chose Boston for both it's technology and it's atmosphere. Then I did a focused search for a job. I wouldn't even consider SLC strictly because of it's social atmosphere.

Who would consider moving anywhere without taking into account the social aspect?

I would also hazard a guess that the percentage of Bible thumpers is lower among geeks/scientists/engineers than the general populace.
