Elon is a 4-year liberal arts school in North Carolina... with about 4500 students.
Academic Computing was going through some major changes in the mid-90s and the department head was going on maternity leave. She had a bunch of trusted students who already maintained the Novell, NT, and SUN network, so she put us all in charge while she was gone. We had quite a bit of power and it worked out great because students can be on call faster for network outages.
But as soon as she went on maternity leave, our safety net was removed (meaning she wasn't there to protect our jobs). We were sooned fired and repalced by Contractors. The network and Servers became a mess. And students started to trust the department less because of what happened.
I agree. This is a great opportunity for students to learn alot and for the school to save money while we learn.
