  1. Re:What about fake diamonds? on Diamonds Are A Space Station's Best Friend · · Score: 3

If you had read the article you would have seen that they were talking about using synthetic diamonds:
Instead it uses thin films made up of millions of microscopic diamond crystals. Polycrystalline diamond films can be made artificially from methane, through a process called chemical vapour deposition.

Sure BIND and sendmail are 'server' tools but many linux distro's install them by default even when a desktop install is selected. We were talking about Auckerman's mom and how she would never find out about these exploits, let's see her find out about those bugs on her redhat box? I'm pretty sure she couldn't fix them. The issue isn't server or desktop, it's 'power user' vs. 'average joe'

There is absolutly no way my mom would EVER know about this problem. This is exactly why Microsoft has "Critical Update Notification" for Win98, ME, 2k. Everytime a security update comes out you are notified, and asked if you want to install it. My copy of Redhat 7.0 has never popped up with a warning that new expliots to BIND have been found, so unless I manually check for updates they are never installed.

  6. Who choose to opt-in? on RIAA Wants Opt-In Filtering For Napster · · Score: 3

My question is who gets to choose whether music will be available or not:
    A) The Record Company
    B) The Artist

An Artist like the Dave Matthews Band, Madonna, Courtney Love, Fred Durst, and many more have voiced their approval of Napster, but they are all under contract with RIAA member companies.
    Will their music be available?

Not to troll or anything, but this is one of the advantages with windows.

With every new windows release the list of natively supported hardware grows, so now even if ATI/Matrox/etc goes out of business the card will still be supported by the newest windows version. A good example of this is with sound cards, Aureal went belly-up and their incomplete open source drivers for linux suck, but in windows 2000 and xp there is native support (no disk or downloads required).
  9. Multi Processors under Win9x on Emergence of SMT · · Score: 4
why under an OS such as Win 98 or ME, even a single Pentium III 1 GHz will handily outperform a dual-Pentium III 500 MHz setup

This is because Win9x does not support SMP so even dual 933MHz will be out performed by a single 1GHz. A better comparison would with Win2k or Linux, which will both actually use both CPU's.

  10. Re:Why bother? on The Plusses And Perils of Overclocking · · Score: 1

Overclocking made far more sense before AMD grabbed hold of the market. Two years ago a Celeron 300a cost only $100(CA) and the current top of the line PII 450 cost almost $1000(CA), but the Celeron overclocked to 450MHz and actually outperformed the PII in several benchmarks. The only real risk of this type of overclock was to the CPU, and with adequate cooling mine has run for 2 years (24x7x365) without a problem. Cost of cooling = $30(CA), cost of faster chip = $900, the choice in such a case is simple.

So hypothetically, if I'm an ignorant user and accidenttly allow smb/nfs/ftp shares of my mp3 collection to anonymous users, I am responsible for those who download? 12. How is possessing an .mp3 a crime? on Copyright.net Springs Into Action · · Score: 4

Since when is it a copyright violation to possess mp3's of cd's I own? I can see users getting banned for downloading copyrighted content, but if I simply checkthe box to search my hard drive, napter automatically shares every mp3 on my drive, including legitimate mp3's created from my own cd's. I don't see how this is a violation of copyright law, as having these mp3's is covered by fair use.
