  1. It's a lie detector, in advance on DHS Goes Ahead With 'Pre-Crime' Detection Project · · Score: 1

This sounds like the next generation of the same dubious technology that is know as the "lie detector."

Basically, if someone is nervous or in pain, they show heightened levels of distress in behavior.

    And that's now probable cause.

  2. I wouldn't take the job on Carol Bartz Is Out As Yahoo's CEO · · Score: 1

Yahoo has been without direction since 1997 or so. They could have been Google, but thanks to their confused choice of direction, they were not. They have never recovered. That Bartz managed to keep the stock from sliding further suggests she did the best anyone can do with Yahoo, "a company in search of a plan."

  3. TANSTAAFL on Stanford AI Class 'Beta' For Commercial Launch? · · Score: 1

We're seeing education become like television, advertising-funded.

While this is sort of crass, it might mean lower student loans.

  4. Never say die on Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda Resigns From Slashdot · · Score: 1

    CmdrTaco,

I've followed this site since 1997 in various forms, mostly lurking and rarely contributing anything of value except dumb jokes.

You have created a great resource, one that helped define the web/internet age "in the public," and we are all in your debt.

While it is a weighty thing to move on from such history, this life seems to me defined by principles: "who dares wins" and "never say die."

You will find new mountains to climb, new lands to conquer, and new mysteries to solve.

I'm cheering you (and all who strive) on.
